Task Group Reflection Paper
I was involved in a task group last summer at my agency; my group was assigned a policy to review and update, in preparation for our quality assurance site visit. The group got off to a rocky start as there were initial disagreements as to how to precede with completing our report. During the process, we also lost two members and the remaining members were tasked with completing the report by the deadline. I was put in groups for a week to work through a set of tasks. There was a mixture of males and females with a wide range of ages. There were some people that played a part in the group activities and there were some that did not, this was what contributed to the breakdown in communication in my group. The first day we got into groups, we had to do a learning styles questionnaire. In this questionnaire there were four types of learning styles, which where activists, reflectors, theorists and pragmatists (Honey, 1973). In my group of seven we were made up of reflectors, theorists and pragmatists. On the second day we did a group activity about the skills knowledge and attitudes that a health care professional should have. During this task we were divided has a group even more because we all had different views on what we thought was the ideal health care professional. Day three we did a Kohlberg’s moral dilemma (1981) where we had to choose whether Heinz should steal the drug or not. My group was divided on whether he should steal the drug or not. On day four we did a self and peer-evaluation questionnaire.…

Talking to a group can often make people feel threatened and they may keep quiet to avoid this feeling or to avoid other people’s reactions to their opinions. It is therefore important to make sure the group has the right emotional atmosphere. People in groups often use humour or other friendly behaviour to give the group the right feeling to encourage everyone to talk. In some group talks such as team meeting and class room discussions there is a leader. Having this leader can be useful to encourage people to express their ideas and opinions and help the group co-ordinate taking turns with talking. The group leader can also help focus the group on one topic. Group communication fails if everybody speaks at once. It is important that people sit in a circle so they can see each other to creating a positive feeling and it makes it more successful in turn…
