Teachers Should Be Allowed To Carry Guns In Schools

Teachers and guns, is it ok? There has always been a contradiction on the topic. People have argued that it isn’t safe and that it shouldn’t be allowed for years. It has already been passed in 18 states and many public and private schools have already begun allowing it. Guns should be allowed to be concealed by select teachers in all schools. Teachers should be able to carry firearms at school. “the arming of teachers would have a greatly immediate impact on violent behavior in schools by criminals.” (Ayoob). As Ayoob says, there wouldn’t be as much violence in schools if teachers and staff were trained and had weapons. The teachers that would be armed will need to go through a mandatory training, the same training as police and security guards. “For the concept to work, teachers would have to voluntarily offer to carry and pass strict
psychological testing, and go through at least twice as much training in firearms and the judicious use of deadly force as current laws demand of armed security guards.”(Thorough Testing and Training). The teachers that carry will be safely trained and responsible for the situation. There are many cases where if the teachers were armed, that they could’ve flipped the outcome. “For example, Dave Sanders, the extremely brave teacher who was killed trying to save his students, had been armed and trained, he would have been able to put an end to the violence and save his own life.” (Armed Personnel Make a Difference). So many deadly issues would be resolved in seconds if teachers were armed. There are many times where people that were not armed were purposely taken advantage of.
There was a school in Israel that took students on a trip to the “Island of Peace”, where they were asked to leave their weapons behind. “An Arab gunman saw the easy target and opened fire, killing seven children and wounding six.”(An Absurd Idea?). Bad guys are always looking for the easiest way to commit a crime. Another situation took place in Pearl, Mississippi, where a student stole a hunting rifle with many rounds and opened fire in his school. “The vice principal rushed to his car and took his .45 semi auto pistol and made the student surrender.”(An Absurd Idea?). Yet another reason why guns should be in schools. Lastly, there was an eighth-grade graduation dance in Edinboro, Pennsylvania where a fourteen year old started to shoot and the banquet hall owner stopped it from being worse. “The owner rushed to his office where he had a shotgun and confronted the shooter, limiting the toll to only one dead teacher and two wounded students.” (An Absurd Idea?). In any scenario, a firearm wielded by trained personnel truly saves
lives. Some people oppose this solution. “Guns have no place in our schools. Period. We must do everything we can to reduce the possibility of any gunfire in schools, and concentrate on ways to keep all guns off school property and ensure the safety of children and school employees.” (NEA: Arming Educators Won’t Keep Schools Safe). They think that if no guns were on campus period, would make it safer. They may think that nobody will still bring a gun onto the property and commit a mass murder, but that’s where they’re wrong. Nevertheless, if somebody is planning a shooting, they aren’t going to go where they know teachers and staff are armed. That’s why there needs to be armed teachers and staff, so if that were to happen they could stop it and prevent students deaths. So overall, they don’t have a valid argument or facts to support and back up their opinion. Trained and select teachers should be able to protect their students. There are no valid reasons why they should not be allowed to. Many problems have been resolved so easily with the simple solution of arming teachers. So, if you were in a shooting, would you want a responsible person to protect you and your surrounding peers?
