They both died only a few weeks before British soldiers liberated the camp (“Anne Frank Biography”). With no food, Margot weakened from malnutrition and became very ill. Freezing cold temperatures did not help her and only made her more miserable. Anne was doing her best to try and keep Margot positive and keep her spirits up, but that is hard to accomplish when your sister is dying in front of you and there is nothing you can do (Sawyer 95). “Every day Anne and Margot grew weaker and thinner, their eyes appearing darker and deeper. Then one night, Margot lost consciousness and died, falling from the top bunk to the stone floor of the barracks”. Anne only grew worse with each passing day. She became delirious, losing touch with reality. She influenced countless people with her diary and even when she was looking death in the eyes, she still found strength to remain positive. In her diary Anne wrote, “Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart.” She continued to remain positive and always had hoped that one day she would make it out alive, even though she had a rare chance of survival. Anne showed us and proved to everyone today that even in the toughest of time you can still be positive and think the best. She chose to see the good in people and keep hope along with faith. She was always cheerful and everyone around her said “her smile was contagious.” Anne is a courageous icon. She did the best she could to stay positive as well as keeping people around her positive and cheerful. The annex, in which Anne and her family along with friends were hiding in for more than two years, is now a museum in which millions visit per year. At her house in Amsterdam, there is a tree named after her in honor of her and the Holocaust. Anne was only 15 when she died at Bergen-Belsen and she still left a legacy behind. In her diary she said, “One day I was to do something in the world and when I die, I want it to seem like I am still alive” and that’s what she did.
