The Compromise Of 1850: The Cause Of The Civil War
It is pre-civil war time and tensions are rising in America over a very controversial topic, slavery. Slavery is one of the most controversial topics there is and that is why there was a war over it. Slavery caused the civil war. The cause of the civil war was slavery through people’s reactions and actions to the Compromise of 1850, John Brown’s raid on Harper Ferry, and the expansion to the west.
The compromise of 1850 was the first reason the Civil War was caused. The Compromise of 1850 was a solution to California’s wanting to enter the union and ended up upsetting the balance between slave and free states. On the website American Historama it says “The Compromise of 1850 was an attempt to smooth out the confrontation between the slave

In 1859, John Brown, a strong abolitionist, lead 18 people and raided Harpers Ferry in an attempt to get weapons. Though John Brown was executed for his action, it demonstrated that Northerners were willing to fight for there cause. John Brown’s raid is a cause of the war because it panicked the Southerners who thought Northerners were out to kill all of them. It states in the book The American Vision that “For most Southerners, however, Brown’s raid was all the proof they needed that Northerners were actively plotting the murder of all slaveholders” (Appleby 301).
The civil war was also caused by the expansion to the west. Expansion to the west was a cause of the war because as it expanded, the government had to decide if slavery was allowed in the west. In the website history.com, it states that “In 1820, the Missouri Compromise had attempted to resolve this question: It had admitted Missouri to the union as a slave state and Maine as a free state, preserving the fragile balance in Congress” (History Staff). If there was no expansion west then the issue of free to slave states wouldn’t have been a problem.
Slavery was a fundamental cause of the Civil War. Although slavery was not the only cause of the Civil War, there were other causes too, like state rights and the interpretations of the constitution. The issue of slavery caused the Civil War by motivating the Compromise of 1850, John

The Compromise of 1850 was made to settle issues between North and South about territory and slavery that was caused by the Mexican-American War. There were five bills made. The first bill was that California was a free state. The second state was that Texas would be paid compensation by the government for giving California and New Mexico up. The third bill was that New Mexico was a new state without any specific prohibition of slavery. The fourth bill was that there would be no slave trade in Washington DC. By 1850s, the slavery issue had become weighted with so much ethical and political fright that it challenged easy resolution. Slavery was the spark behind the civil war; the South’s defense of slavery and the North attack on it raised a collection of stereotypes that inflated the real differences between them. It started in Fort Sumter to protect Charleston harbor, South Carolina, when President Lincoln tried to provision federal troops at the fort, starting an aggressive response from on-shore confederate forces. 4.…

I had originally thought that the main cause of the Civil War was slavery; however, after my research I now believe the true cause of the Civil War is much more complex. I mostly agree with agree with Holt and his theory that the political crisis caused the Civil War. While reading Holt’s essay I became convinced that slavery alone couldn’t have caused the Civil War because the tension over slavery had existed for so long before the Civil War. It was the destruction of the previous two party system that left the South feeling politically stranded which lead to the Civil War. This viewpoint was supported by my research on Jefferson Davis for the meeting of the minds. Davis felt that the South was losing faith in the political system because…

Some historians argue that slavery was the primary cause of the American Civil War. As Robert E. Lee said, “In this enlightened age, there are few I believe, but what will acknowledge, that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil in any country. It is useless to expatiate on its disadvantages.” I believe the statement that slavery was the primary cause of the American Civil War is true, because slavery was very controversial and became the symbol of disunion.…

Slavery contributed to Civil War in numerous ways. The cotton industry was booming in the South, and was in need for vast amounts of Labor. The North and the South would come to strong disagreements over slavery. The main reason that slavery contributed to the civil war were that the South’s economy depended on free Labor, and the North had no need for free labor because their industrialized economy provided stability for wage labor, so the north wanted to abolish slavery.…

One of the most important causes of the civil war in my opinion would have to be the Nullification Crisis of 1832. This Crisis was unlike many others due to the people it involved, and the way the certain people handled the situation. In 1832, President Andrew Jackson was one of the primary founders of the democratic party. Jackson was a major supporter of states rights, but that all changed during the Crisis in 1832. This crisis was a confrontation between South Carolina and the federal government.…

The Compromise of 1850 was a true compromise. Both sides of the debate were perfectly unhappy, or “halfway happy” as it has been phrased. Instead of being content that they got something they wanted, both ended up resenting the other more for what they got, and for not seeing it their way. The compromise did nothing to improve relations or communication between the two sides. It entrenched both, and shut down debate as everyone involved was increasingly defending and justifying their beliefs.…

If asked, most people would blame as the cause of the civil war the issue of slavery. This is understandable; many people in the U.S. at the time were against slavery, going to far as to help runaway slaves escape to the free north. But, while slavery at face value was a major factor, international politics and economics played a major role. Several factors, including the election of Lincoln, the raid on Harper 's Ferry, the Dred Scott decision, and, most importantly, the fugitive slave law, contributed to the growing rift between the North and South and, eventually, the Civil War.…
