I learned that counseling is a process carried out by qualified counselor, ruled by BACP framework for Good Practice in Counseling and Psychotherapy that using counseling skills helps the client to improve how they feel or facilitates them to work through emotional, behavioral problems.
In my opinion counseling is the act of facilitating the client to see things more clearly, possibly from different point of view, facilitating their journey. While counseling skills are the skills that are needed for counseling; some of these skills include active listening, unconditional positive regards (being non-judgmental), congruence (honesty) and empathy towards of client's feelings.
I understood that counseling is a service that helps people to live their lives and solve their problems in another perspective. Counselors normally have the skills and theory to make the conversation as helpful as possible. Plus, the very nature of the counseling relationship is different from the relationship we have with friends or family, and sometimes, it is precisely this different sort of relationship that is needed for the conversation to happen. Also others services may offer similar aspects such as confidential services; however it is not counseling befriending.
Person centred approach focus is to help the client to reach maximum fulfilment or potential, and to become fully functioning as a person. Carl Rogers’ Humanistic approach believed in the innate ability of individuals to find their way through their problems given the correct environment to do so. In order to do this successfully, however, Rogers declared that three core conditions: empathy, congruence and understanding must exist. In the absence of one of these, positive personality change will not happen.
