This study was developed due to previous research that found the campus community and other social and personal factors discouraged minority students of color to enroll to universities. The goal of this study was to find unique ways of making minority students of color feel comfortable in these universities, break down any misconceptions they may have and get them enrolled and guide them through the completion of their program. The idea of racial microaggressions has been around since the 1970s, you may not know any extremists, you think “I don’t hate black people, so I’m not racist”, but you benefit from discrimination. There are certain privileges and opportunities you have that you do not even realize since you have not been deprived in certain ways. Racial microaggressions are a type of perceived racism. In a country the size of the United States, different races and different views on the equality of each race exist. Affirmative Action was a put in place by the Federal Government to help conserve the protection of rights towards minorities, whether it be determined by race or sex, during the time after the civil war when they people were still being discriminated upon based on these two aspects. Affirmative Action created a situation that allowed minorities a guaranteed spot within a workplace or a school, eliminating racism and allowing the minority to be recognized for its accomplishments. This may not have been the best solution for the problem but at the time it was put in place it was a necessary mean to try and correct an evil. Affirmative Action is still in place today even though it shouldn’t be. It creates discrimination by trying to get rid of it. Administration officers and CEO’s of companies feel the need to fill the percentage that they were given so they turn their backs on more qualified persons. With Affirmative Action, a white man may lose a chance to get a job or go to college, simply because the position must be filled with a black man, to meet the designated quota assigned. Also majorities look down on the minorities who get into colleges and get jobs over them by saying that they only got the job because someone just needed to get the spot filled so that they wouldn’t get shut down. This makes the minority feel worse about themselves because really don’t know if they got into the school or got the job based on their own merits or not. Racial Bias has always been an epidemic across the United States even generations back and modern society. The traces of hostility and biased mistreatment towards specific races continue on existing today, although many people attempt to fight for change. An article, by Morland, J. K (1987), which focuses on the development of racial bias in children, clearly suggests how racial bias was viewed earlier in history while saying how a darker skin complexion is associated with evil and children learn early on that a lighter skin shade is more preferable and superior in society. The University of Tennessee has 28,000 students, in which 7.59% of that total is African Americans. Of that 7.59% of African Americans, only 998.8 of them are African American males. Once these black males graduate, they will begin to search for the desired career that they have academically and socially prepared for at the University of Tennessee. Every day, job openings become available to people who are whether, not happy with the job they currently have, or those who simply want to work in a field of their desire, but what do you do when you are one of those African American graduates whose identity is an automatic degrading factor to your acceptance of your desired job or career? The year of 2012 is one of the most racially controversial years due to the re-election of the first African American president and homicide cases such as Trayvon Martin’s that involve a multi-racial Hispanic American murderer. These current issues are not the only supporting evidence for black males’ stereotypes that play against their opportunities, but historical issues are the originating factors of these ongoing stereotypes that will help one understand its existence. Historical events such as the slavery of Africans embody the origin of black males’ stereotypes and limitations. Jamel K. It had to do with the moving of 6 million of African American from the southern hemisphere of the united states to the northern hemisphere around the time of the 20th century. Racial disparities among African Americans aren’t the only problematic race in America. Latinos are also runner up in racial problems. US health racial disparities have been neglected despite the fact that Latino communities range from mixes of all different other races. This researched compared the mortality rate among Latin Americans and other races in the United States. Most Latin Americans are immigrants, so they are unable to receive the best health benefits if even any at all. Attending this event was a great way for me to start off my spring semester. It gave me a sense of empowerment that I have been longing for some time now. Being an African American on this campus is truly difficult, you feel as if you are not seen or heard because the color of your skin is full of melanin, your eyes aren’t blue, and your hair is coarse and curly.
