The Giver By Lois Lowry

For my independent reading project I chose to read The Giver written by Lois Lowry. This story takes place in a “perfect” society. A society with no color. A society with no feelings. A society with no individuality. A society with no freedom. This book is set in a dystopian society, where everyone is the same and everything is chosen for you The main character in this story is a twelve year old boy named Jonas. He got placed into a job as reviver of energy. In the beginning of the book he is very shy. Eventually he grows and it outgoing and is not afraid to talk to people. The Giver gives Jonas good and bad memories. At the end of the book The Giver and him make plans to run away. He then runs away with Gabe. Jonas’s dad is Gabe’s caretaker and Gabe was going to be released so Jonas ran away with him. Jonas’s dad is the caretaker of a newborn child named Gabe. Gabe bonded very closely with Jonas and when he found out that Gabe was going to be released so Jonas made plans to run away with him. When you are released you are euthanized. When Jonas and Gabe run away he gives Gabe warm and happy memories so that Gabe is peaceful and calm. The next main character is The Giver, he is the old reviver of memory. In the beginning of the book he follows the rules, however by the end of
He receives all of the feelings of guilt, pain, war and emotion that no one in the community has anymore. When Jonas starts to receive all of the memories he begins to realize how boring and plain his community truly is without all of these emotions that he has received. Jonas wants to share these memories, so he shares them with his little brother Gabe every night, and he and Gabe start to connect even more since they now have the same feelings. However Gabe was in danger of being released, Jonas decides to escape with Gabe and leave the community. When he leave his memories will go to the community and it will change society
