Have you ever wondered what the world would be like without any memory? You don’t have any memory of love, pain, war, and even color, if so the The Giver is an excellent read for you. The novel The Giver is written by Lois Lowry, and it was published in 1993. The setting of The Giver is set in a futuristic utopian society. Jonas the main character lives in a world where it seems to be that nothing goes wrong so basically everyone lives in happiness without any sadness. When Jonas begins his training in the beginning of the book he starts to spend lots of time with an old guy named The Giver who holds everyone's memories in Jonas’ community. But we had to let go of others.” (Lowry, 95) The receiver of Memory in the community is named The Giver, he owns everybody’s memories in the community, even though him holding the memories could permanently hurt the citizens. - “If you were to be lost in the river, Jonas, your memories would not be lost with you. Memories are forever.” (Lowry, 144) Gabriel is Jonas’ family’s newchild. Mostly every family unit in the community has a newchild that the unit must nurture before the new children can be aged. Gabe and Jonas become very close together. Jonas’ best friend Asher is another main character in the book, The Giver. Asher is a funny kid that likes to joke around about a lot of things. Asher is assigned the job of a Drone Pilot. Jonas’ father is another main character, he is very kind he has a job as a Nurturer. He works with infants in the community. He loves his two children, He loves his job and takes it very seriously. Jonas’ Mother is the final main character. She is a kind and loving woman. She has a very important job at the Department of Justice. She takes her job very seriously just like her husband. Jonas discovers the dangerous truths of the memories in his community. Jonas is powered with lots of knowledge but he does not know that. Once he figures out the secrets of his community he realizes that he must escape from the community to protect himself and others. A challenge that nobody has even thought about or have done
