In the beginning Jonas had been just a normal boy in his colorless and organized community. He was about to become a 12 soon and was wondering what his lifelong job would be. His father was a Nurturer, one who takes care of infants, and his mother worked at the Department of Justice. When Jonas became the Receiver of Memories in training, which is the most powerful job and greatly looked up upon, he had to learn different circumstances and situations of the past. The first memories the Giver gave to Jonas was the memory of sleeping down and snow hill. The Giver had to give Jonas both happy and fun memories such as a Christmas morning and horrible memories such as war and death. In Jonas’ community they had a concept they called release that happened to newborns who were born with disabilities and people who broke the rules. After about a year of receiving memories, Jonas also learned how to give memories too, even though it was against the rules. His father brought home a baby boy named Gabriel who was struggling and if the baby did not sleep well and function like a “normal” baby they would have to be released. Jonas loved that little boy and he gave him calming memories to help him sleep. After about a year being with the Giver, he told Jonas about what being released actually means and what happened to the other Receiver of Memories in training.
