“Usually it’s just a matter of birthweight. We release the smaller of the two”(Lowry 114). In the book The Giver the people who live in the community aren’t allowed to choose what they want to do with their lives. These people live under a strict set of rules solely focused on everyone being the same. The community gives no one the freedom to choose what they want. Whenever there is a set of twins in the community they pick the one they think is going to thrive more based off of their birth weight. When Jonas was looking through his front door he could see all of the many different jobs that people may receive. “Looking through the window, he had seen no people: none of the busy afternoon crew of 8 Street Cleaners, Landscaping Workers, and Food Delivery people who usually populated the community at that time of day”(Lowry 2). “ Jonas’s father’s title was Nurturer. He and the the other Nurturers were responsible for all the physical and emotional needs of every new child during its earliest life. It was a very important job”(Lowry 7). The book is always showing how the committee selects a job based on what they have seen a person do so they can tell what that person may be interested in. In our society most people go to college for what profession they want to pursue later on in their career. They get the opportunity to choose what they want to do in their life. Our society is able to have the privilege to choose the career path we want to take. In The GIver the people in the society don’t have that privilege because of the committee wanting sameness and thinking that life is better with assigning people
