The Giving Tree
In the The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, the book portrays a greedy boy and an unconditional loving tree.In the book the boy kept asking the tree for things to help him in life and the tree always had something for him. The tree had unconditional love for the boy throughout his life. The boy kept going to the tree throughout his lifetime. In The Giving Tree the theme states that the tree acts as mother figure for the boy and gave him what he wanted.
The boy was greedy and the tree would give him what he wanted even when she had nothing left. She was like his mother figure his whole life. As a child the boy would go to the tree and play on her branches and climb up her trunk and he would go everyday. He would take the leaves off the branches

The tree asks him to play on her branches and climb her trunk when he returned. He said "I'm to busy to climb trees... I want a house to keep me warm... I want a wife, and I want children, so I need a house. Can you give me a house?" And the tree gave him supplies for a house because she loved the boy. Then he needed a house and went back to the tree to ask if she could help him with that. She did what she always would and helped him with his house. He took her branches and later on he took her tree limb to build a boat and she got sad. She was sad because the boy rarely visited her and kept taking her things from her. She became a stump because she didn’t have anything else to give but she didn’t mind. She was happy to give the boy what he wanted like a mother would.
In the book The Giving Tree the boy is selfish and the tree is selfless and has unconditional love for him. The tree was so kind to the boy and would give him help and guidance. Unlike the tree the boy was greedy and very selfish. The tree wanted him to play on her branches like he did when he was younger but he didn’t want to. All he wanted from her was money, a house and a boat. This book teaches a good lesson. The book was published in 1964 and is a recommended children's book. If your child hasn’t read the book I would recommend the book

The tree is therefore personified as a woman in the story as she exhibits characteristics of the "maternal instinct" and though she did not give birth to the boy she takes him in as if she had.

One of the main messages portrayed in the story is that unselfish everlasting love ultimately has the greatest effect on the lover not the one being loved. The mother figure/tree was deeply wounded in the long run as every time the boy came for something more, she would have to sacrifice a part of her body to make him happy or satisfy him. Psychologist Barbara Frederickson offers a psychosocial theory on the concept of everlasting love. She describes that it does not exist and ultimately any connects a human being engages in is true love if those engaging in the scene are both portraying strong positive emotions. Taking this theory as fact, it leads to a counterargument on whether or not the tree truly loved the boy or felt obligated to show feelings towards him. Either way, she along the journey of her life loved more than the boy but ultimately ended up sacrificing everything for him, once again portraying that maternal instinct.

“Our Christmas tree was never even an inch under eight feet, and it took the whole family hours to decorate it. Each year one of us was honored by being allowed to place the angel at the top of the tree, while Father help us up in his strong arms.” (Pelzer 22). This passage is a simile because this is how we are in Christmas, our tree would be long and it takes us a whole hour to decorate it. We are allowed to place the star on top of the tree, and that is what’s amazing about it. This brought my attention and interested me because it showed how good the mother was to her children and hoe kind she treated them, because the name of the chapter called Good Times. It also shows that the kid remember how good she was and then how she turned…

Before his incident at the tree, Finny was a sports all star. He was gifted with superior sports skills; this was shown when he beat the school swimming record without ever having practiced at all. Once the fall occurred, Finny’s life was changed forever. “Sports are finished for him [Finny], after an accident like that. Of course. . . . If I [Stanpole] had the slightest hope that he could do more than walk I’d be all for trying for everything. There is no such hope” (55). Finny’s life revolved around sports, and once the accident occurred, his life was over. To Finny, the tree represented loss, sadness, and eventually death. As shown in the book, A Separate Peace, the tree plays a very important role in the lives of both Gene and Finny, the two main characters. The tree symbolizes the tree of the knowledge of good and evil from the Bible, it represents fear, hatred, and jealousy to Gene, and it also represents loss and sadness to…

In conclusion, the way Oliver uses, “The Black Walnut Tree,” to convey the relationship between a tree and a family is impelling. The figurative language used to describe the journey a mother and daughter go through to make ends meet relates to society now. Many families travel through months at a time, not knowing if they would have to sell something valuable, when they would run out of money, or when money would become hard to get, however they still remain strong and make wise…

“The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs and “The Third Wish” by Joan Aiken vastly incorporate the element of theme throughout the course of the story. For example, “The Monkey’s Paw” illustrates the consequences of greed. For instance, the Whites were given the opportunity to make three wishes with the monkey’s paw. With this, the family wished for two hundred pounds, in hopes of clearing their house. “‘I wish for two hundred pounds,’ said the old man distinctly” (Jacobs 109). Wishing for money proves that the Whites are greedy and only hope for fortune. The family’s cupidity resulted in Herbert's death, proving that acquisitive behaviors are followed by negative outcomes. Another theme emphasized throughout the story in the inevitability of fate.…
