Effects of Language Management on Movies with Multilingual Storyline: The Godfather
The media has power, the power to influence the society in terms of what to belief in and how to perceive the world. In most of the times the way we view the world; politically, culturally and socially, is mostly depicted by what we see in the television. For the children, who spent most of their hours watching television, it is the only way they view the other people in terms of their race and national origin. One of the contribution of race or national origin discrimination in the world has been due to the stereotyping that are depicted in the films or TV programs which we watch. The effects of language management, in a movie with a “multilingual” storyline, is of adequate importance to ensure that the stereotyping portrayed are positive.
I picked The Godfather movie as it embodies a multilingual storyline, the use of both Italian and English languages. The movie is an American film that was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and stars Marlon Brando and al Pacino as the leaders of a powerful New York crime family. One of the reason for the use of Italian ascent in the film is to depict the location where the movie storyline started i.e. Italy and the race which was been described in the movie. In the Godfather much of early the events occur in Sicily in Italy (Cortes, Italian-American film: from immigrants to icons”). The use of Italian and not English shows that in that region, Sicily, Italian was the official language as the area was in Italy.
