Additionally, I agree that it provided trade center by allowing the imposition of duties on goods transported along the Silk Road. However, some point is arguable that the Great Wall did more harm than gain; for instance, deaths of the people. For construction of the Wall, a massive number of soldiers, convicts and commoners were used as the labor force (11). As many as 400,000 people died during its construction due to the heavy work, no resting, and poor working conditions (3)(11). The workers were not allowed to rest and those that complained or ran away, were captured, and buried alive so that each stone is believed to be equal to one human life lost in its building (5). It is also believed to be the largest graveyard in history because bones of the workers that died during construction were utilized along with the material to build the wall as the emperor wished to construct the Wall as soon as possible and not waste any time
