A novel that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed in English this year is “THE HOBBIT” by J.R.R.Tolkien, which is part of the widely known fantasy genre. The plot of the book is about a young hobbit by the name of Bilbo Baggins who is visited by a band of dwarves lead by the great Thorin Oakenshield and a grand wizard called Gandalf who are looking for someone to share an adventure with and reclaim the dwarven kingdom from the mighty dragon Smaug. At the beginning of the adventure, out of the party Bilbo is least fit for the job that the dwarves have asked him to do, is that of a burglar. On paper Bilbo should be the right one for the job as hobbits have the ability to tread lightly and fit into small spaces but Bilbo is man who enjoys his comforts of home.
He has no time for adventures and enjoys sitting in front of the fire.
“Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things make you late for dinner”
He prefers to stay indoors and rarely does anything out of the ordinary.
In this essay we shall see how his character progresses in to a more resourceful courageous and quick-witted person throughout the novel.
During the story we see examples of Bilbo’s character becoming more resourceful as the story goes on. The first example is the group missing Gandalf are trapped in the eleven king’s dungeon. Bilbo is soon able to devise the beginnings of a plan while watching the guards get rid of their rubbish.
“For some time Bilbo sat and thought about this water gate and wondered if it could be used to help his friends escape, and at last he had the desperate beginnings of a plan”
This example illustrates how Bilbo is becoming a more resourceful character. As he had the idea to scout out his surroundings and watch the guard’s patrols to discover an alternative route out of the dungeon. Furthermore, during his time watching the patrols he also listened in on their conversations to locate his companion’s cells
