In October of 2010, Chancellor Motley created the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, affectionately known as (ODI), and charged it with strengthening the University tradition of diversity.

ODI partnered with the New England Higher Education Recruitment Consortium in hosting its 2nd Annual Diversity Recruitment and Retention Conference at UMass-Boston
It also coordinated the visit to UMass Boston of Margaret Fairman, Director of the Office of Prospective Students & Scholarship at the University of Queensland in Australia. The meeting served as a positive platform to showcase UMass Boston's successful student outreach, scholarship, and mentoring initiatives and helped to increase the university's profile on a global scale.
