The Importance of Reading
«Reading must be one of the hobbies of a teenager»

Todays teenagers do not read as many books as a teenager even 10 or 20 years back used to. Why is it so?

Reading is important nowadays. In this modern era, we have advance technology which made many things that seemed impossible to be done happened. The advancement of the Internet and computers made the teenagers to have a much enjoyable life. Teens can get so many more things than they can get from a book from the Internet. There are websites which will give plenty of information like “Wikipedia”. When we are reading a book, we are learning things in a much more boring way. Books provide information which was written by the writer and we will not learn more from the book. Teenagers are more familiar with the internet than the book as they are more exposed to the internet. The forums online might also be another reason. Teenagers can speak and share with the other people from all parts of the world. Sharing with others will be fun and we can learn more than a book can provide. On the other hand, reading is important because it is not just about communication or learning. It is an all in one package where you learn interesting and capturing facts and ideas from people all across time and space. Along with that you developer your concentration and attention giving skills. Most of todays "multitasking teenagers" are talented but they have a very short attention span. This can be a problem in later life. Reading gives them much needed practice, practicing to concentrate and think in one direction keeping the mind open and responsive at the same time. Therefore I think that reading is important.

No matter how young or old you are knowing how to read is a powerful tool. Reading provides you with an imagination and the ability to escape into another world. You gain the courage and confidence to speak in front of groups. And reading allows you the opportunity to write and empower others. As Dr. Suess said, “the more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”…

I believe that the reason to why we read is to educate ourselves and also, sometimes, to enter a fantasy world. What I live by is that you need an education to be successful. The reason I read is to educate myself so that I can broaden my way of thinking and expand my knowledge. With a greater knowledge of what is out there in the world, that will make it easier to be successful, not only for myself, but for everyone. There is no way that an individual without the ability to read can be accepted into university, let alone, finish elementary school. Reading is essential for learning not only the school curriculum, but for life as well. Keeping up with the economy, reading news papers, reading instructions, reading street signs, are all a must. Murphy states that reading is not a must, but it makes life easier. I agree with some aspects of this statement, but I also disagree. Yes, reading does make life easier, however I do not know how it would be possible to be a part of a community without the ability to read, with the exceptions of infants because they have their parents there to guide them. To walk in a community, not being able to read what is around them – not knowing where streets are, or what stores are what. This is not only an inconvenience to the person themselves, but to people around them…

It is well known that reading to children, especially throughout the toddler and pre-school years, is positively correlated with increased reading and literacy levels throughout the school-age years. One particular study (Lee, 2010) investigated the impact of reading to children specifically during morning transitional periods at a childcare facility. The implications of this study show that there could be numerous benefits linked to parents reading to their children during these periods in particular.…

People used to read books, magazines, and newspaper articles for researching purposes. Now, the norm is to use Google’s search engine. Most books, magazines, and newspapers can be found somewhere on the Internet nowadays. A person can purchase almost any book on their E-reader, with an Internet connection, and read it from anywhere. Book stores are basically becoming obsolete. The book store, located where I live, closed down a couple years ago when E-readers, such as, Nooks, Kindles, and iPads, started growing in popularity. Because the action of reading and getting lost in a book requires a completely different brain function than skimming articles on the Internet, many people nowadays do not spend their time reading books.…

In order for a child to excel in school they need to be well versed in reading therefore; I believe that it is vital for all children to learn to read. Not only should reading be a fun and enjoyable experience but something that influences the child to succeed in all subject areas. Reading is an integral part of life that needs to be mastered. A child can master the basics of reading in the early years and should be learned at that time due to the aggravation and frustration of learning those skills later on, as he/she gets older. Although there are many children and adults alike that hate to read it is our job to spark an interest in these children so they will find reading enjoyable. All of the aspects of reading should be equal and balanced in order for the child to learn. Although I loved reading when I was younger, I still had to ingrain this behavior into my own children so they could see reading could be enjoyable and that it was an everyday part of life.…

First of all, books cannot be replaced by technology such as the Internet because the book has its value, credit and meaning. Although the Internet has become more popular and more widely used, it cannot totally replace books and become the main way that human inherit literacy. According to Ursula K. Le Guin, the article, “Staying awake: notes on the alleged decline of reading,” states that reading book is a challenge and meaningful activity. When people read, they need to use their own hands to turn pages, use their own eyes to process language, and use their own brains to think; instead of just pressing the buttons (2008, ¶…
