“Hard times don’t create heroes. It is during the hard times when the ‘hero’ within us is revealed” Bob Riley. Odysseus is an epic hero during hard times he always finds a way out of trouble. He uses many epic hero traits including leadership, superhuman strength, and wisdom. First of all odysseus has many epic hero traits but, one of his more important ones are leardership. Odysseus, in The Odyssey by Homer, and I both demonstrate determination in many different ways. The first example is when they stopped at the land of the Lotus Eaters. The men that ate the lotus wanted to stay on the land because they were addicted to the lotus, but Odysseus, the great leader, would never let that happen. He said, “I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under their rowing benches” and told the rest not to eat the Lotus or they would lose their wishes of wanting to return home (898). This shows Odysseus’s committed and driven state of mind in the way that he would not leave any man behind, and he knew he needed to help them up on the ship and return them home safely. In addition, Circe warned Odysseus…

To begin with, Odysseus is a very effective leader because he is fearless. No matter what obstacles he has to face, Odysseus gives it everything he has. He stands up against monsters, gods, and even the elements. He fought against the god Circe when she turned his men to animals, “Without a word, I drew my sharpened sword and in one bound held it against her throat” (920 Homer). He also shows that he is fearless when he stands up against all the suitors that tries to take his place as king, “’You took my house to plunder, twisted my maids to serve your beds. You dared bid for my wife while I was still alive. Contempt was all you had for the gods who rule wide heaven, contempt for what men say of you hereafter. Your last hour has come. You die in blood’” (957). He pulled a sword up against a god. Any other man would be afraid because of the consequences. Without Odysseus’s fearlessness he would not have survive his treacherous journey.…

To Polyphemus, Odysseus was a villain who tricked him and blinded him. During the Trojan War he expressed an enormous amount of hero traits, but later in his journey, especially in books 9-12 his heroic behavior diminished.…
