In the book The Last Unicorn, Schmendrick proved that he was a hero by being selfless. Schmendrick was selfless when he helped the Unicorn rather than taking the wish she offered him. On page 43 the Unicorn stated that she “owe you a boon, for you set me free” (Beagle, 43), while Schmendricks response was simply “take me with you” (Beagle, 43), referring to going with the Unicorn to take down King Haggard and the Red Bull. Schmendrick was caring when he turned the Unicorn human to save her from the Red Bull. On page 102, the Bull was trying to force the Unicorn to the sea, but Schmendrick used his magic to turn her into a young human girl. After Molly Grue consistently asked “what have you done?” (Beagle, 103), Schmendrick replies “only saved her from the Red Bull by magic, that's what I've done”(Beagle, 103). This was caring because Schmendrick cared about the Unicorn too much to let her be hurt or driven into the sea with the other unicorns by the Red Bull. Therefore, Schmendrick is caring because he saved the Unicorn from the Red Bull by turning her human.
In conclusion, Schmendrick the magician may not have been the main character, but he was the hero in the book The Last Unicorn because he was selfless, courageous, and caring.
