The Link Between Racism and Poverty Racism, the belief that one race or culture is fundamentally superior to another, is a perennial concern that has impacted the lives of many individuals,and is now being recognized as an issue that is profoundly linked to poverty in American society. Racism can exist in many forms and is now being closely connected to poverty in the economy. In today's society racism plays an important role in low wage workers going into poverty. White privilege is the result of social policies, institutions, and procedures that has advanced the welfare of white citizens and impeded the opportunities for colored individuals. The most important aspect of white privileges is economic advantages, which gave white Americans more power than colored citizens. Racism causes economic disadvantages and burdens for groups of color. Some examples of events that have exemplified the link between rave and poverty and have caused suffering to colored individuals seeking a way to escape poverty are slavery, and the Plessy vs. Ferguson case. Slavery resulted in the wealth for not only white slave holding elite but for also all who benefited from the and participated in a slavery centered economy, such as merchants, bankers, fisherman and many more. The Plessy vs. Ferguson case persevered the thought of racial segregation and separate but equal philosophy throughout society. It also decreased the educational opportunities(which is still around)for African-Americans and economic disadvantages in the labor market. In todays society black are treated with the same amount of disrespect. For example in Washington D.C. African Americans are outraged and are protesting because few african americans are being hired and are causing them to go into poverty. The unemployment rate is nearly 20%. Today 1 of 5 kids are in poverty, however for kids of color it is much worse. More than 1 and 3, 36%, black kids live in poverty and 31% of latino kids live in poverty. In 2009 16 states reported poverty rates for black children were higher than 40% and 5 states had more than 40% of Latinos in poverty, whereas no state has a white childrens poverty rate over 23%. The2010 foreclosure crisis,which affected various communities of color, stole whatever wealth black and latino families had saved throughout the 90s. However the white citizens who have better access to the markets have been able to regain some of their footing as the stock market has recovered somewhat. The markets are not working to help the communities of color andthe unemployment rate which also affects the communities of color has led to their downfall. This in turn is causing multiple families to go into poverty and causing their kids much pain. These hardships that these families go through is effecting their childrens lives. The kids that grow
