Escape to Freedom

It’s nearly dark outside. We always have to wait until its dark.it just isn’t safe to travel in broad daylight. So I reluctantly got up from the mud and grass, which has been my bed for the night. We always sleep during the day, however if you ot three hours of sleep you were lucky. The group that I travel with have been reluctant in letting me join them. They believed that because I was a young girl I couldn’t make it all the way. But I’m determined to show them, I’ve already made it out of Virginia unharmed and prepared for the journey ahead of me.
I was the only one that could make this journey to freedom in my family. My mother and older sister both died of a disease that is unknown to me, and my father was sold to a new master. As my father was been taken away from me he told me to make it to Canada where I can live a safe live. And so that is what I must do, no matter what. As we walked I imagined what it was going to be like in this new place, but I was also scared at the same time.
It was a crack of a twig that caught my attention and snapped me out of my daydream. It came from behind. I quietly told the person ahead of me of it, but he thought I was crazy. They claimed that we were in a farm owned by someone that was part of the Underground Railroad. I told the person that I was going to hide until I was sure it was safe. He didn’t argue, but I could tell from the look on his face that he was glad I was leaving. I tried to get some others to come with me, but the only one that listened was a mother with her child. We ran to a nearby bush.
I saw a light which looked like a group of men with their dogs they were gaining on the escaping slaves that I have been following just moments ago. I knew the men saw them when one of them raised they gun. The man with the gun didn’t hesitate to pull the trigger. It was too late for the slaves who have just noticed them now. I starred at what was happening with eagerness, hoping that they would

It was at night, when we had first heard that a slave trader from the Deep South would be coming to our plantation. John the coachman said that Massa and Missy Hensen were planning on moving north. Massa Hensen was sick and needed to see a doctor but he didn 't have the money to do so, since all the crops were turning out bad because the soil was used up and needed time to recover it 's nutritious qualities. John also told us the Massa Hensen was planning to dig up some money by selling some of the slaves. That night Mammy Sally told me that we might be separated. It was then that I had first heard of Canada, a land where black people like us live freely because the law wouldn 't allow any slavery there.…

By the time I reached 10th grade, my mother was able to earn enough money to process our documents for applying in the Canadian embassy. It was a long wait, I remember. A few years went by after we processed the documents, we finally received a letter announcing the approval of our Canadian Visa; it was the best moment of all. But the greatest moment for me and my sister we’ll never forget was the moment we walked out in the arrival area of the airport and seeing our mother for the very first time after thirteen years apart. There were tears smiles hugs and kisses; our life was about to…

A mere twenty minutes later, I was exhausted. The sun had burst through the clouds and was basking the mountainside in violent light. I was roasting in the safety of my outer shell. As my once confident steps became desperate shuffles, I began to understand that my end was near. But I had a goal to achieve, and so I fought to deny what I knew to be true. Soon, I fell back and separated from the group. It was then that the guide made his move. He swooped down on me, looked me in the eye, and told me it was…

My game plan for the night was to keep myself busy until I heard camp’s music stop in the distance, and then I would go to sleep before it got completely dark to keep myself from getting scared. I really enjoyed the daylight hours of my Solo Night. I went on a little walk, read some of the bible, wrote a letter, drew pictures, and laid in a field. Once I heard camp’s music stop, I got in my tent and went to sleep with no trouble at all.…

I flipped over and I broke free from captivity. The IV that was in my arm was dry when I took it out. I headed past the hellish mirror and walked out of some double doors. They knew I was coming. They had men lined in front of the gate of this prison with guns. They opened fire on me but the hellfire which was brought upon me did nothing to me. I lashed my way thru the waves of men laving a path of Death as I walked. I made out of the front gate. “Sa lok fer min dovah los por loch” The sun turned red.…

In The Power of One book 2, Bryce Courtenay brought a deeper meaning into each of the many quotes used to express the character's attitude and the atmosphere of the scene to the audience. In fact, in the beginning of book 2, the author elaborated on the previous quote from Hobbie, but this time from a new friend/ mentor of Peekay, he rants “First with the facts then the trust”(340). In other words, the author overlap these 2 quote from to show a similarity between the two characters. He exemplified the fact that Morrie is an important character to this journey and that Peekay will acquire and develop new characteristics that will allow him to grow. Furthermore, the audience know that Hoppie’s quote had taught Peekay a great lesson in life and boxing, this is…

! Growing up in a war torn country, I always dreamed of living in the United States. Every person in our small town talked about how exciting and full of opportunity America was. Play dates, cartoons, and trips to Disney land made the top of every little kid’s birthday wish. Unlike most children, my birthday party did not consist of bouncy houses, stacks of presents, and a princess cake. Burning buildings, solders, and panicked refugees were the highlight of my birthday party. Giving up the only world I have ever known and fleeing to America was one of the most drastic changes in my life, especially at such a young age.…

"The Power of One" follows an English-speaking South African boy named Peekay from 1939 to 1951. The story begins when Peekay's mother has a nervous breakdown, and Peekay ends up being raised by a Zulu wet nurse, Mary Madoma; who eventually becomes his nanny. At a young age, Peekay is sent to a boarding school. As the youngest student attending the school, he is frequently harassed. The students call him Pisskop (meaning piss-head) and rooinek (redneck—a name given to the British during the Boer War) among other names. This continues with an older boy, the Judge, and his partners who further punish him for his frequent bedwetting with verbal and physical abuse. The Judge is a Nazi sympathizer, and he has a hatred for the English, proclaiming that Hitler will march the English out to sea. The Afrikaans woman who runs the boarding school does not console him and walks around threateningly with a whip.…
