Diversity is a concept that is definitely not strange in America today. For America is a melting pot of people from all over the world. As a matter of fact, I happen to be an immigrant from Nigeria, who had the immense privilege of coming to live in this renowned
nation, and was welcomed with warmth. This makes me an example of America as a diverse and progressive nation. I consider this one of my greatest fortunes because living in America is an opportunity for me to live and experience a whole new culture every day. Ranging from the fast food cuisines like MacDonald, that America is popular for. To those unwritten “rules” such as having to maintain eye contact when in a conversation with an elderly person. Meanwhile in Nigeria, the reverse is the case.
Consequently, my coming to America has fueled the desire to discover more of the world. I hanker to experience the world and have an increased sense of diversity. This is a hunger that cannot be satiated by lectures on different cultures or just learning the language. It is for this reason that I participated in my school’s study abroad program to Wales. There, I learned to appreciate the great potential of such a small and developing country. The cultures of other people can be adequately experienced and appreciated if we actually experience it first-hand. Then, we can truly respect the countries past, present, and even future.
Similarly, diversity is something that should be highly encouraged in our everyday lives, especially in the workplace and schools. Considering that, it definitely helps when different people are trying to solve a problem and seeing it through completely different perspectives. This will stimulate debate and communication, thereby prompting immediate and cohesive results. Therefore, it is safe to say that diversity increases productivity due to the fact that, with diversity comes creativity. Also, diversity builds character. For example, majority of human beings are presumably accommodating to people they perceive as different. Hence, they are more likely to overlook certain behaviors that might be considered as discourteous.
