The Civil War in America
The Civil War was a time when the country was extremely segregated. The country was divided into the North and South. The North was referred to as the Union, and the South was referred to as the Confederate. According to Civil War Trust, “At the beginning of the war the Northern states had a combined population of 22 million people. The Southern states had a combined population of about 9 million” (CWR.com). The major difference between the North and the South was the ideas on slavery. South was left with lower representation in the Congress. It was clear that the North was attracting more people because of growth in its industries, while South was left behind as it mostly based on agriculture. North was also a sophisticated society filled with educated people. Therefore, it was natural that the North viewed the South as a narrow-minded society and with more people coming into its territory, North suddenly gained immense power over the South. There can be an enormous amount of judgement coming from both sides now. The balance of power shifted to the North, which was essentially against the institution of slavery. It was obvious that the people in the North fueled the uprising of slaves against South, which eventually culminated in Civil war. The war was not only a conflict between whites and blacks, it was more power struggled between the modern states of the North and the states of the South. Since the North believed in the fundamental human rights and wanted slavery to be abolished, they sided with the slaves in their freedom struggle. South was enraged at the Northern states but since it was losing its original strength and power, war became inevitable.. However, slavery was the central cause. It is important to know that even if slavery was more an economic problem than a moral one, it was the strongest factor that resulted in the most violent conflicts of all time. There are some who feel that slavery could have been abolished without a war, but all previous attempts had failed and it was unwise to assume that slavery could simply vanish one day. Therefore, war was inevitable since the South was sold on protecting the institution of slavery. Unfortunately, the conflict turned extremely violent and hundreds of thousand of people lost their lives. Today the United States is a country where slavery is looked down upon completely and even tries to stop this trade in foreign countries. This shows how slavery is such a big deal to society. Never again will we find ourselves in a Civil War like this because society has adapted and our ideas have formed together to create a functioning
