Coming into the project I was looking forward to interviewing a veteran, at first I really wanted to interview a World War Two veteran. I thought it would be very cool to sit down and hear an untold story of a true American hero that fought in one of the most memorable, and one of my favorite wars. But as I continued to search for a World War Two veteran I couldn’t find one so I joined groups with Tyler, Jose, and Mauricio. They had then told me that we would be interviewing Tyler’s stepdad, who was currently enlisted. Of course my dream of interviewing a word war two veteran was tossed out of the window. Service learning is a valuable way for students to engage with their communities. When tasked to incorporate a service learning activity into my English class I was faced with a few difficulties. Language Arts standards are very complex and cover many different areas including: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Service learning lends itself readily to the speaking and listening areas, however, I decided that I would attempt to build a unit that enriches student learning in all four domains of the English/Language Arts curricula. The fear of darkness is a phobia for those who have been affected by it in some way or the other. It is not the fear of the dark but the possible risks concealed by darkness. For my senior service learning project I worked with Another Chance for Animals. They are an organization who works with Evansville Animal Control to find foster and forever homes for the animals there so that they do not have to be euthanized. The main events that I attended where PetSmart adoption events from 9 A.M. until 3 P.M. every Saturday, My jobs included walking the dogs around the store, taking them outside to use the bathroom, cleaning crates, and talking to potential adopters about the dogs. I also attended a craft show that ACA put on and worked their merchandise table for seven hours.
