“A little adventure in the forest”.
(after H.G. Wells’ short story tale
“The treasure in the forest”).

I remember when I was a kid my friends and I quite often went to the forest. There was fresh air, we could hear songs of the birds or the rush of water. There we had a clear space among the trees where we fried potatoes and sausages.
It was the end of august. It was exactly the fish season. My best friend and I went to our favorite place which was near the road. There were private houses across the road. It was a wonderful day and the sun was near the zenith. The idea came to our mind to take a walk there as usual. This place was not far away from our houses. We thought that there was nothing to worry about and nothing could happen to us.
We went down to the river from the hill. There was sweet water which flowed from the mountains. To cross that river we had to climb and crawl on the big tree. This tree was some kind of a bridge which joined one side of the land with the other side. If somebody looked at the water he could fall down. There was a very strong watercourse (поток воды). There was a frothy breakwater on the side of the stream. It was an adventure for us.
As soon as we crossed the river we walked along it to the hill. Great plants grew among the roots of the big trees and spread rosettes of green fans. When the wind blew the leaves were singing on the trees. The blotched fungi and moss extended through the roots of the trees. The fungi were different sizes and color. The moss was so soft, that if you lie on it you would feel a soft pillow under you. The honeysuckle was ripe on the bushes.
Then I saw some man who was gathering something, perhaps some mushrooms. I told my friend about it. But in some seconds I couldn’t see him. I was worried.
Then we saw some metallic tubes which later became a bridge for us. There were some dead fishes. Some people caught them and took the caviar for personal needs and then throw it into the

We were all sucked dry from the sun that day with zero energy left, we scavenged what we could and we still ate better than we could have at any local dinner. The day was still long and was only going to get hotter and longer even as the day came to a close. There was more things to do around the land than there was at any theme park. So as we all sat around and waited for something to do you could tell that everyone was thinking the same thing as sweat poured down all of our faces. The cold spring fed creek was the only thing that was going through my mind and I knew that was the only thing going through anyone else’s. We walked down to the creek as there was no other way that you could reach it, and as we got closer and closer you could hear the light eco of the fifteen foot waterfall coming off of the trees. The only thing I was looking for was the spit of the water flowing up through the large oak and misquote tree branches. You knew when everyone saw the water, you could see the sight of the crystal clear water shining off of everyones eyes and you could tell that there was a sudden sign of relief that came upon everyone after the long walk through the large misquote trees avoiding as many thorns and cactuses as they possibly could, being careful as could be you weren't going to miss all of them. And there was no better feeling than soaking your wounds in that…

There was something lingering in the air, a presence. When felt, the roots bursted opened. Green liquid seeped out, and dripped to the ground. When it began to pool upon the sand, stems began to rise, buds began to appear. A forest had emerged from the ground within minutes.…

I sat there in disbelief, I couldn’t believe my new teacher was forcing me hike a trail and then write a essay about it. But I had to, so I decided to hike the Indian Hill trail, besides I had heard positive reviews about this trail by my friends. The leaves were just turning hues of gold and yellow, I stepped out of the car and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t freezing cold My mom yelled after me, ‘’Be safe.’’ I ignored her. So I started to hike up the trail it was nice, I usually hiked in the Adirondacks so this was a pleasant change. Hardwoods are different than hiking in the pine forest of the mountains, for one thing on this trail there was only a slight incline where as in the mountains the trails…

Growing up in rural Kansas was boring. Especially since I grew up in the seventies. There were no cell phones or game systems to occupy my time. My family had an old black and white television set. I loved to watch The Price is Right in the days before Bob Barker’s hair turned white. After the show was over, the only way to kill time was to play outside and wander down to the creek that ran parallel to our property. There was a secret trail buried in the wall of trees that lined our two acre yard. My brother and I would slide down the trail, landing on the dirt banks like explorers on a mission. Sometimes we would hunt for crawdads under rocks. Other times we would take our poles and fish. We never went into the water after the time I got bit by a gar.…
