I decided to look at this because the website title intrigued me and when I saw the list of performance enhancing drugs, I knew that this would help significantly to show what athletes use. This is important to me so that it will support why are why not athletes should use drugs by showing what kinds of performance enhancing drugs are available. In the source it states “The International Olympic Committee and the US Olympic Committee are among 625 sports organizations worldwide (as of Dec. 19, 2008) that have adopted the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) "Code" banning 192 performance enhancing substances …show more content…

The World Anti Doping Agency (WADA), established in 1999, main focus is to oversee drug testing and to partner up with Olympic organizers to help regulate testing at major sporting events. Throughout the years, athletes have been using a wide spread of illegal banned drugs and substances to help them perform well during sporting events. The WADA currently has a list of over 200 banned substances that prohibit athletes from using. The list include substances such as blood doping, and Performance Enchanced Drugs (PED). The main reason why athletes use illegal banned substances is due to the amount of pressure from the team and fans to win. Like stated earlier, countries rely on sporting events for their wealth, and if their athletes and teams…

From the eyes of many sports fans there is no straight answer to the question “do drugs ruin sports”; Some fans might say yes because it morally wrong, other fans say no because faster stronger players are more fun to watch. In professional sports the best players are paid the best and there is a lot of competition out there to be the best; some people believe hard work and dedication is the way to get to the top while others believe there are shortcuts to get there. What if people used performance enhancing drugs in sports? Are there any side effects from using PEDs? Should professional athletes use them? What if I use them just to be a little better in sports? Many people would argue that legalizing performance enhancing drugs will make professional and recreational sports better. They think sports as a whole will be raised to the next level of entertainment. Despite this belief, sports can only be brought down from the use of these drugs; if an athlete has no skill or natural ability performance enhancing drugs will only hurt them.…

As it stands, almost all forms of performance-enhancing drugs are banned, no matter their strength or potency. This can catch athletes off guard, as substances that are considered illegal in the eyes of sporting authorities, are often found in common antibiotics and medicines. Permitting the use of all performance enhancing drugs would take away this grey area, and allow athletes to use any forms of personal medication without having to fear being caught ‘cheating’.…

Taking PEDs (Performance Enhancing Drugs) are a big temptation in an athlete's life. Taking PEDs is considered cheating for sports and could have severe consequences. But just like cheating in school, some people will think it is okay to do it and they don't care if they do it and get caught or not. Taking PEDs is also known as doping. Doping originated by a Nazi doctor to make them more aggressive in the battlefield( Jacobson ) . Usually, athletes are taking PEDs to help their performance for whatever sport they are playing in. Different types of PEDs are Anabolic steroids, Androstenedione, Human Growth Hormone, Erythropoietin, Diuretics, Creatine, and Stimulants. Cyclists use PEDs more often than any other athlete, there are health issues,…

When approaching the issue as well as trouble of steroid use amongst athletes, it is important to acknowledge that juiced athletes are in part a product of the increasingly medicalized society in which we live in. Within this society, possible social problems are converted into individual troubles (cf. Mills). Oftentimes we see the problem as arises from the trouble (within the individual) instead of the issue (within the entire society). Also, the inherent nature of the behaviour at hand becomes ignored. The underlying structural issues (pressure inflicted upon athletes by society, rewards of winning, disappointment and dishonouring of losing) fade to the background. Since the social system is not under any sort of scrutiny, the individuals are faced with all the blame for a personal problem inflicted upon them not always by their own right.…

For as long as sports have been around, countless numbers of athletes have been driven towards being the best. As sports become more competitive, many athletes find several ways to improve their strengths and abilities. One possible solution to the problem is the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). Specifically Steroids, which flourished in Major League Baseball in the 1970s. During the 1900s steroids quickly became much more excessively used and widespread. Awareness of the problem was initially ignored, however; the statistical evidence on the issue had become much too strong too and the problem was brought to the attention of the public. The awareness of the issue left the public with questions on how the drugs work. Steroids have…

In fact, many of these products are available at nutrition stores or on the Internet. Performance-enhancing drugs are used to give athletes an edge. Whether this edge is in competition or in self-esteem, consequences play no part. Why would any athlete disregard consequences and consider using performance-enhancing drugs? For many, the possibility of unlimited gains is enough reason to justify disregard to consequences and use of drugs.…
