Summer Classes should be abolished

Summer is a time for fun and relaxation. Most people during summer spend their time travelling to other place or going to the beach. But some students, like myself has to spend the summer going to school and take summer classes. Everybody needs to take a break every once in a while. Be it from school, work or even from reality. That is why I believe that summer classes should be abolished.

One the reasons why summer classes should be abolished is because us students deserve to be given a break from all the stress we’ve received from school. We go to school for more than 10 months and we only get a 2 months break. It really seems to be unfair for us students. Being on vacation doesn’t mean we don’t learn anything new. According to the week staff (2010), 71 percent of adults said kids learn valuable lessons in the summer break by working, pursuing athletics, or attending camp.

Summer classes should only be given to those who want to take advanced courses or to students who failed their subjects and have to make up for it. Not all students want to have summer classes but there are some people who want to graduate early, that is why they take advanced classes but that doesn’t mean that everyone should take it because others want to relax on summer and have some fun.

It shouldn’t be given especially to us Architecture students because even without summer classes, we are already loaded with a lot of plates and assignments and due to that, a lot of us have already experienced sleepless nights. Architecture students like myself deserve to be given a vacation, a time to relax from all the pressures and stress we had from our plates and studies.

In Indianapolis, their school board suggests to have year-round classes for the students in their city. Eugene White, city superintendent, said “the schedule would add 20 class days every year, giving pupils more time to learn and shorter periods

Over all public schools, there are only 4% that operate on a year round calendar. In that 4% there are 2 million students learning under a year round basis. Besides, year round schedules mitigate education loss from the previous school year. It also tarnishes the tradition of summer break, according to “Should You Give Up Summer Vacation?” by Laura Kelsey. Evidently the year round calendar is a prime solution to alter failing grades and help struggling students catch up. For instance, some students are overwhelmed with work and drama that occurs in school. With that in mind, year round schedules have more spread out recesses eradicating the overwhelming school environment. Simultaneously, year round calendars lessen memory loss between long breaks. Thus helping students retain and understand their curriculum. Lastly, studies show that American students are less proficient in academic topics.…

The traditional schedule for school is outdated because in the old days, it allowed for children to help harvest crops during the summer. Now, the long summer just enables kids to be lazy and easily forget what they learned at the end of the previous school year. If a year round school year were to be implemented, kids would not be able to be as lazy and breaks would not be so long as to let kids forget a whole bunch of their school curriculum.…

The students “A real plus not practical with a year-round schedule is students can use traditional summer breaks to gain work experience, to take specialized courses or remedial tutoring, to learn swimming, practice music, study the arts or just for family time and vacations, all of which shape a student's character.” (Jensen) Instead of extending the school year, educators should concentrate more on improving the quality of time now being spent in school.…

Have you ever wondered why teachers take a whole month to review everything from the previous year or why students tend to forget everything? Every year, students are keeping their calendars at hand and counting down the days until summer vacation. It’s the last day of school and when the final bell rings, kids are ready to do nothing for three months. However, is this really a good thing? The possibility of having year-round schools is at hot debate topic right now and it is time for change from traditional calendar schools. Schools should incorporate a system where schooling is year-round instead of having a long summer break because this allows for more learning and would prevent the problem of students forgetting everything they’ve learned the previous year.…

Frequent breaks in the school year allow students and teachers to recharge themselves, be more active in class, and have higher academic achievement. Students and teachers can get tired if they have ongoing class for ten months without a break big enough to recharge. Some of the illnesses that people could have fought off when they were fully rested could make them sick and make more people absent (edweek.org). Absences due to illnesses can be sustained by year round school because of the time to recharge and can raise their academic achievement by having more time in class than when they would usually be sick. Although summer vacation may be fun, having frequent breaks in the school year can help students retain their knowledge and have higher academic achievement (nea.org). Retaining knowledge because of shorter summer breaks…

Would a year-round school schedule improve students’ academic performance? There are many debates on whether schools should extend their educational calendar to a full year. While year-round school schedules have their share of benefits, there are also negative outcomes. People often claim the more the better, but what really matters is the quality, not quantity, of education. Year-round schooling should not be organized because students may develop health issues, wouldn’t be prepared for college, and students may miss out on other opportunities during the summer.…

With the 9 week long break from school students lose much more information. Students lose a month of information they were taught the year before during their summer break. Once non year round schools return to school teachers are having to reteach most of the information that the students learned the year before. 24% of teachers spend the first five to six weeks of school reteaching material that the student has already learned. Non year round students score lower on test at the end of the summer than they do at the beginning. Non year round students have not been in class for an extended amount of time so they generally forget what they were taught the school year before.…

It may sound logical but Dr Von Hippel has debunked this myth after completing an experiment. He states, “Students in “year-round” schools don't learn more than their peers in traditional nine-month schools... A sociologist at Ohio State University found that, over a full year, math and reading test scores improved about the same amount for children in year-round schools as they did for students whose schools followed a traditional nine-month calendar.” There's no academic improvement and on top of that many people believe that year round school is longer than a normal school which is also false. They have the same amount of days as a traditional nine-month high school however Instead they have “tracks”. So track 1 could have school for 3 weeks then they would have vacation for 3 weeks while track 2 has 3 weeks of school after coming back from vacation. This also limits who is seen by who every day if two people’s schedules do not cross. Public students should be given what's best for them. If year-round has no academic improvement then why should summer be taken away? At least summer benefits students with nutrients from the…

Have you ever considered switching to year round schooling? Here are some reasons not to switch, the summer time is packed and expensive, it’s harder for students and teachers, and finally there is a greater possibility for brain drain. In the article “Top 10 Reasons Why Year Round School is a Good Idea,” it states that by having one big vacation block, travel is more expensive. No matter the amount of time you get for summer you will still wind up spending more because both of the summer breaks, for year round and regular schooling, are during the summer months which are when airlines raise their prices. Also, by having less time off there is less time to play sports and hangout with family which is what most kids, like myself, look forward too. Another statement from the article said that breaks that are frequent are good for both students and teachers. With more frequent breaks the teachers will have to cram in all the information before each break. Students look forward to days off of school, but if breaks are more frequent, then they won’t get as excited because the breaks happen so…

    Year-Round School

First of all, people might assume that since the summer vacation is shorter, it cannot possibly be better than the summer vacation that they already have. However, there are multiple reasons why year-long school summer vacations are better than regular vacations. First off, students do not get as bored over the summer of year-round school. Speaking from personal experience, regular summer vacation can almost seem too long. When it gets close to the month of August, summer seems like it has drug on forever. Students start to get bored of summer, and they want the interaction with their peers, that they cannot always get over summer. They want to see their friends again, especially the ones that they did not get to see over the summer. With year-round school, this happens less. The summers are shorter, but it allows students to see their friends sooner. It also gives a faster relief of the boredom that many kids suffer after the long months of doing almost nothing at home. Another benefit provided by year-round school is that students do not forget all of their material over summer vacation. Again, summer is long, and students forget almost everything they learned the past year over the vacation. With a shorter summer, like the one provided by year-round school, students will be likely to forget less of the material they learned over the course of the school year. If students forget less of the material that they learned, then they can start at a more advanced spot when they return. If students start more advanced, they will ultimately be able to learn more throughout the course of the year, which further benefits their education. Overall, even summers can be improved by changing to a year-round school…

    Year Long School Year

Many schools in the United States are beginning to change their school calendar so their students attend class all year round. The changes still allow the students time off in the summer, but they do not have the three months of break most students in America receive traditionally. Instead, they get a break of a couple weeks in the summer, and the remainder of the time is divided up and put into other breaks throughout the year. All schools in America should switch to a year-round calendar to accommodate the different and higher level of learning needed to be successful in our changing world and society. The traditional school system was designed many years ago when our country was an agricultural nation. Therefore, the school calendar was developed having a long break in the summer so students could assist their family with cultivating crops and other aspects of farm life. The traditional school calendar was not a calendar for higher learning, and should be extended to meet the needs of modern day students. There are many explanations as to why the traditional school calendar should be changed.…
