It’s almost hard to pin point the exact moment one may start to compare themselves to something, because for some it seems so natural. The work place is the perfect environment for one to compare
their hard work to another’s. With that being said, it might not always turn out to be as useful as one had imagined. For example, let’s say a co-worker and yourself both walk into the office, and your boss hands you both a stack of papers that need to be retyped by the end of the week. You feel slightly overwhelmed by all the work ahead but you believe that you can get it done quickly and efficiently at your own pace. After a few days in, you go and check on your coworker to see how they are doing, but to your surprise you have noticed they were already done with the assignment. You were completely shocked and now feel as if you weren’t good enough for this task to begin with. Ridiculous thoughts begin to race through your mind such “My coworkers is better than me.” or “Why can’t I be as fast as my coworker at typing?” By feeling and saying these absurd judgements to yourself, you are belittling all the hard work that has been put into this assignment and the faith you once had at the beginning was now thrown out the window. It’s upsetting how fast ones pride and confidence can be thrown to the wind after only seeing what was on the surface of their coworker’s desk.
