Touching Spirit Bear Character Analysis
Cole Character Profile

“He is an innocent-looking, baby-faced, fifteen-year-old from Minneapolis who

had been in trouble with the law half his life”, like it says on page five in the book

Touching Spirit Bear written by Ben Mikaelsen. Cole Matthews is the main character and

focus of the book, he is the protagonist. In my opinion I think that Matthews is very

in-tune with himself and, extremely selfish. I think that he is a troubled kid who

Doesn’t know how to deal with his problems the right way. He does not respect elders,

power of others, or people above him. Matthews does not trust anybody that is not

scared of him, as it says on page three. He thinks extremely high of himself, but in reality

he is just a kid with mental issues. Issues like,

I get that he is angry but he knows better.

I would say that children who decide to commit crimes begin at 15, or 16. The

thing kids get in trouble for the most often I think are drugs and violence. I know drugs

like marijuana and different types of pills are a problem for teenagers and I also know

from hearing things in this town that animal abuse is a problem. Punishments for

children these ages is normally probation or even juvy. I think it is important to know

what could happen if you commit these crimes. In my opinion and many others, this is a

serious matter. You are literally breaking the law, and I think that some kids, or even

adults do not understand how bad that truly is. Many people who support the jail system

believe that locking kids up helps public safety. As Americans I think that there is not a

lot that we have to do, like rule wise, so just follow the rules. It’s not super difficult

to do. I get that we all want to be our own person and whatever but you can’t really be

your own person in prison, there are even more rules there, and people that have a

higher value than you. I think that Matthews needs to realize

Tons of high school kids, not all, but lots contribute to underage drinking, illegal drug use, noise pollution, theft, etc.. With younger kids they may not see these as breaking laws and simply being a teenager having fun, but while maybe rare and not affecting all who contribute to these things, they can cause serious problems and could be very damaging and even fatal in some cases, which is why they are laws that have been put in place for solid reasons. With the younger society it’s hard to realize these things, as it is somewhat rare of them getting caught or having serious or fatal injuries as result of breaking these laws. They also usually tend to think they’re young and invincible and it’s okay to drink and smoke or steal or whatever they may do, but lots of times these could turn into serious habits/addictions that could lead on to adulthood, and could also seriously affect their health as they grow…

A child growing up is acquiring more rights and responsibilities as they mature, and probably the most significant is the right to free education. Prior to ten years of age a child can not commit a crime as the law regards them as not knowing the difference between right and wrong. From ten years of age and on, a child becomes criminally responsible and is now treated as having sufficient understanding of the serious nature of their actions. They will be held accountable for those actions in the same way as an adult (Goody and Silver, 2012).…

Think of the general deterrence theory, youths may not commit crimes of a certain nature because they know what the consequences of their actions will be. Personally I think in many cases regarding the general deterrence theory is followed by the youth for the simple fear of punishment if they commit a certain act which keeps them from offending.…

What age should one truly stop being called a juvenile? For as long as time can tell, there has been crime performed by both adults and adolescence. These intolerable acts vary in severity, and some cases simply cannot be ignored or put off even for a day. Regardless of the purpose, children around the world commit crimes on the daily worthy of them being charged as an adult. Truly, we shall never fully grasp their purpose. Nevertheless, should it be allowed for our justice system to metaphorically take their lives away?…

Young criminals know that they can get by with their crimes. Until they are 18, they know that the government claims that they are not responsible for their own actions. When it comes down to a direct statement, a crime is a crime, and someone must be punished for what has been done. In addition, supporters claim that age is not an excuse for committing heinous crimes, for even juveniles must know what is morally correct or incorrect. However, this is not a valid argument, for age is actually imperative when deciding the punishment, especially since “the region of the brain that is the last to develop is the one that controls many of the abilities that govern goal-oriented, ‘rational’ decision-making, such as long-term planning, impulse control, insight, and judgment.” (Arya 9). Besides, adolescents would still be sufficiently punished for their crimes by spending time in a juvenile detention center, along with other punishments a judge may present. However, they would not be punished to a terrible extent as they would be in the adult system, and they would continue to be…
