Athletics is ingrained in the human experience and is an integral part of American culture. Because of that, many of my weekends and after school hours have been dedicated to either watching a game or starting one with the kids in the neighborhood. Athletics runs deep in my family. My great uncle was a professional baseball player and my family, including my father, three brothers and a sister, are all very involved with the various team sports. It’s this immersion into various sporting activities that has led me to the understanding that engaging in athletics has a very positive impact in our lives. Additionally, sports are extremely important in building one’s character through hard work, learning to work with others on a team and by learning how to cope with the joy of winning and the inevitability of losing.…

In my interview with Mertz I focused on group dynamics. I was curious how an individual sport functions as a team. She said that this season had its ups and down like any other but overall it went well for her personally. Her main goal was to just keep getting better despite an injury that she suffered earlier in the year. She achieved her goal by coming in first place in the 800-meter run when last year she came in fifth. The women’s track and field team did amazing overall. For example, they placed second in the country, had two national champions, and four all-Americans this year. Emilie said that even though they had…

Though I had not meant for it, running has become representative of me, whether I like it or not. It’s my individualism, and in a time when everyone strives to be unique, it’s also my common link to normalcy. So why is is a big deal? Well, I have found that individualism is nearly always encouraged, but only as long as it’s done with compliant undertones. The fine line between sheer brilliance and utter insanity is in fact the one thing that makes both impossible: a link to the social ordinary. It’s quite the paradox, in which I have yet to find a middle ground. But at this time, everyone seems to be looking for…

The Race Between Cross Country and Track Cross country and track are my two favorite sports. I love running through the woods in cross country and the competitive atmosphere of track. However, I like to run cross country more than I like to run track mainly because cross country has a more interesting running environment. But cross country and track are more similar than most people think. Track and cross country are both extremely similar and yet extremely distinct from one another. Different, but yet similar, in the sense of preparation, practices, meets, and racing. How much preparation an athlete puts in before a meet will affect how well they will perform. For example, in cross country, it is highly recommended that cross country members run over the summer, so they will be in shape by…

For the past six years of my life, I ran for the Eureka Springs High School cross country team. After graduation, I was given the opportunity to run for the Golden Suns cross country team at Arkansas Tech University. In a matter of six months, my cross country experiences and habits were changed. Often times, there are similarities between two subjects such as these, but in this case, only the differences are obvious. There are changes in not only the way that I run, but the team I ran with, the coach I ran under, and the person I am when I run. These changes have caused me to see what I can do as a runner and a college student.…
