Rated Researchers
A view on knowledge, quality and expertise

PReface

With this publication, the Directorate of Research and Innovation is proud to introduce TUT’s 2012 rated researchers to the research community in general, prospective postgraduate students, other academic institutions and research-related industries. TUT has 39 rated researchers. Their profiles will give the reader some background and understanding of the researchers, their specialisation areas and the difference they make in numerous fields of science, humanities, the arts, information and communication technology and engineering. The former Foundation for Research Development introduced the evaluation and rating system for researchers for the natural sciences and engineering disciplines for the first time in 1984. A new system was implemented in 1999 to cater for research and scholarship in the fields of humanities, social and natural sciences, engineering and technology. The system is a benchmarking system based on the opinions of national and international peers about recent research outputs and the impact of each applicant’s work. Reviewers assess each applicant’s standing as a researcher based on the quality and impact of his/her recent research outputs and contributions. It also provides independent and objective information about the quality of research and South African research capacity in different fields. As such, it is a national benchmarking instrument, as well as a tool to identify strengths, weaknesses and trends in the South African science arena. These 39 rated researchers prove that this institution is well on its way to becoming a research institution with excellent leaders, world-class expertise and outstanding knowledge to make a difference in numerous fields of much needed research in our communities and our country and even on the continent.

In Life there are roads and there are choices. The right or left turn you make along the winding path throughout your life is and should be the one that makes you happy. Furthering your education may be your best and only way to make that right decision. At the present moment I am now currently attending Valencia Community College working towards my Associate Degree in Computer Science. My current major is Computer Science, although Computer Engineering with a focus in Software is what I will most likely pursue as my Bachelor of Arts (BA). Computer Science/Engineering is one of the most popular and fastest growing careers today. Today, computers are used in almost every aspect of our lives: in car engines, microwave ovens, video games, watches, telephones, desktops at home and work, mainframe computers in government and industry, and supercomputers expanding the frontiers of science and technology. Furthering your college education in an institute of higher learning may set you aside from your colleagues at Valencia. The college that I plan to attend after I obtain my AA degree at Valencia is the University Of Central Florida (UCF). Furthering my education is important and essential to my personal as well as life-long career goals. If you think the price of education is expensive, try the price of ignorance. You pay for ignorance everyday for the rest of your life.…

College is the main thing on my friends minds. Where do I go? What do I want to be? How do I even get started? It’s all so stressful, it’s also very scary thinking about my future. The transition from high school to college is a big one, but it’s a transition I am excited to go through. Ever since I was little I always dreamed about going to college. There have been several occasions where I’ve felt my body respond to an emotionally charged situation, but most recently, I would have to say is going back to school. I am a 34 year old, single mother of two. I didn’t graduate from a typical high school due to issues at home but did wind up obtaining my H.S. Diploma from an adult high school. My family does not play much of a role in mine or my children’s lives. My ex was abusive towards me for ten years before I finally had enough and left, taking my kids to a domestic violence shelter until re-gaining my independence, currently providing them with a beautiful home. Although this is typical for many, I am the only person in my family to make an attempt at college and hopefully will be…

Transitioning from the middle school to the high school was definitely a hard task to do. I was constantly worried about getting lost, and not being able to find my way around. When I first arrived at the high school, I was very intimidated by the size of the high school and a number of hallways and classrooms in the building. It took me multiple days to actually get used to the building and where my classrooms are located. But, now it has been a few months since transitioning the to high school, I feel like I know the high school very well and where everything is located in the school.…

Middle school is awesome! In the transition from elementary to middle school, it can be tough, but you will make it! One major change is having six new teachers with different rules. For example, Mrs. Provost lets you listen to any school appropriate music, Mrs. Buggy only lets you listen to Josh Groban, and some teachers don’t let you listen to music at all! Teachers have a lot of differences, but they also have a lot in common too!…

Transitioning from high school to college may be hard for some students, whereas it may be a breeze for others. Lawrence McEnerney, director of the University of Chicago Writing Program, and Joseph M. Williams, professor of English Language and Literature, are the Founders of the Writing Program. Together they co-wrote “Writing in College.” Their paper points out many crucial differences between writing expectations of high school teachers and college professors. It also outlines a process on how to promote better writing practices with a strong emphasis on proposing a solid argument with legitimate evidence to back up the claim.…

This is a very tough cookie! I will agree that college opens the door for new life changes that a college student may not be equipped to handle the restraints that come with being a college student and from this can result in BD. I myself going off to college, moving from Florida to California, had a dramatic adjustment which included wild emotions, behaviors, and changes in my personality. I can recall times that I cried just from hearing a family members voice over the phone. It took me more time than others to get the hang of college expectations. Yet, I would not consider myself as going through BD, I would blame adulthood. I pushed through and knew I could not dwell on things. Simple things such as making myself get out of bed, finding…

College was a topic that was often brought up in my household. My brother was the first person to go to college and graduate in my family. My parents wanted me to go to college and be better than they were. Not going to college was not an option; the rules were your either went to college or you had to leave the house. At the same time that I graduated from high school , my brother also graduated from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. In order to prepare me for college, my brother and his friends gave me misguided advice which was “College is easy.” Later on I found out that they were wrong. Throughout high school, I had the perfect grades, the perfect teachers, and I barely ever had to study for an exam. When I got to college, that all…

Imagine someone being 17 years old with a few months left until high school graduation and on their own with the future to think about; that person was me. I decided that I was going to wait a couple of years before I went back to school and I really wish that I wouldn’t have. If I wouldn’t have waited, I would already be done with my degree and making good money. Students should attend college immediately after high school to better their education, achieve independence, and earn higher wages.…

The transition from adolescent to adult is, for most people, incredibly difficult. During my senior year of high school, this transition has changed me for the better. When I was a junior, I did not really care for my grades. I thought going out and hanging with my friends mattered more than my grades. I wanted to have fun in my junior year, and that I cared more for my friends rather than my grades. Later, my parents started to see my grades at the end of the year and told me that they were disappointed to me. My parents said to me that if I do not have good grades for my senior year, they would not help me pay for my college tuition. I decided to be more responsible with my homework, because I wanted my senior year grades to be as good as…

I’ve mostly gotten used to students stressing over “maxing out” because the school and classes I’m in are so competitive, it’s difficult to maintain the mindset that education isn’t just about grades, rather the learning, when I seem to be the only one with that perspective. As a student in the rigorous IB program, I often feel inferior academically to those around me because my grades haven’t always been consistently high like my classmates. Despite being a very social and vocal person, whenever the subject of careers, college, GPA, success/failure, etc. comes up, I tend to shy away from the discussion because I fear that I’ll come across as overconfident and as if I’m trying to distinguish myself as superior to others. To clarify, I firmly…
