There are a multitude of leadership attributes and skills set that are exemplary of a good leader. Listed below are the top five (5) attributes and three (3) main skill set:
Top (5) Leader Attributes
i) Intelligence – Ability to Reason and communicate. ii) Self-Confidence – Certainty in competencies as a leader iii) Determination – Persistence to achieve the desired objectives iv) Integrity – Honest and trustworthy
v) Sociability – Friendly, courteous and diplomatic
Top (3) Skills
i) Technical ii) Human iii) Conceptual
The challenges, to transform the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to a high quality professional service trusted by all require leaders with intelligence and strong technical abilities to effectively communicate ideas and concepts to achieving the vision. The leaders need to have the self-confidence and determination to convince all the stakeholders, citizens and JCF members that the vision is achievable, changing the way the public perceive the armed forces. In order for the JCF to regain the thrust of the citizen, they need to demonstrate their integrity in a visible and genuine manner from top management, replicated throughout the force. The Leaders need to have a sociable trait and excellent human skills to foster friendly and courteous environment. This will be the basis for the final efforts where they must connect with the people on a personal level.
Using Kotter’s 8 stages, in transforming the constabulary to the desired vision, the following would be recommended:
Make this change a top priority by pushing for immediate mindset change from all members of the force.
