El Salvador a Country Report 1.0 Introduction El Salvador or the Savior as the name can be translated is a very unexpectedly unique country. El Salvador is a country of many great geographical sites, a strange history, a blackened economic state, and an incredible agricultural base. The country has undergone many changes throughout its history. It was developed, owned, and operated by many different people and forms of government. This ?land of volcanoes? or ?the Savior? has been needed saving of its own for quite some time.…
About seven billion people live in this world, each beating heart goes through their own changes, whether it’s becoming a military personnel or simply running away from your home and experience the world through your own eyes. My significant change came at an early stage, without any hesitation my parents sent my sister and I to Nicaragua for 4 years. After we landed the only person I knew that spoke English or was from Miami was the flight attendant itself, after that it was my sister and I against a family that we briefly recognize.…
This summer, I was blessed with an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to travel to Haiti on a mission trip. Of course, I was slightly nervous about traveling to a third world country, where I did not know the language, and the only people I would know would be the people from the church that I was traveling with. However, I knew this would be a life changing experience, so I took the leap! I am so grateful I did because every second was worth it! Our mission was to work with orphans, help homeschool English speaking children, and meet with the women’s group of Grand Savann Christian Church.…
first hand the difference it made in our lives, I knew I wanted to help change the lives of…
orphanage. I never anticipated sharing my entire life’s story with the girls of Jireh Children’s Center. Little did I know that my story was so similar to the story of several of the girls there. I had no idea my story could be so impactful to people I didn’t know. For that…
El Salvador, a small country in Central America, has had a huge historical housing deficit that started to improve in the late 1990s. However, the earthquakes in early 2001 shook not only the country, but also the country’s economic and social foundations thus rendering the need for new housing policies. This is the backdrop of the housing shortage in El Salvador today. Due to many factors, the country that was once stable in adequate housing now is facing an issue with lack of shelter for millions of citizens.…
An event I've experienced that was life changing was when I obtained the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America. It was an affirmation of years of disciplined work and study to have such a prestigious honor bestowed upon me. In scouting, I developed various moral and ethical tenants that have shaped my foundation in life. Tenants like integrity, honor, reverence, faith in God, a man's role and his responsibility to his family, and a nearly innumerable quantity of experiences growing under the leadership of the Boy Scouts of America have molded me into who I am today in my very core of being. The realization of my dream to become an Eagle Scout took 11 years to obtain, so I'm no stranger to adversity or perseverance. To my memory,…
At school teachers please us with field trips and fun activities. So since they do this it makes me work harder at school to show that I am appreciative to what the teachers have done for my peers and I. This makes an impact on me because the teachers don't need to do all the things that they do for us. Every year my family down it's close to the kids that need clothing. This allows kids to be warm during winter and have a good set of clothes. donating clothes makes an impact on me because no kid or adult should be cold during winter or be left alone with no…
As my community service, I helped out at a facility called Feed My Starving Children. While there, you make food for starving children throughout the world. This was a very eye opening experience to me and it made me realize how fortunate I am to have a home, food and other things that some children/families don’t…
When I was in the eighth grade I went on a weeklong mission trip with my youth group to Houston, Texas. This trip was a turning point in my life spiritually and mentally, completely changing my thought process of inner city missions at the time. There is a ministry there called CSM that invites youth groups to come and they will take the group to certain places in the city where they can serve and get a feel for the need there and many places. This trip was very impacting for me and I am still looking back on it and realizing the benefits.…
The community I grew up in deep in the heart of Austin, Texas celebrated my heritage, honored differences in culture, and fostered personal growth and self-discovery. My parents, with the strong work ethic they developed on their family’s farms in Ghana, encouraged my brother and me to work hard and find ways to use my skills to be of service to others. My experiences engaging with the communities that I have lived inspire me to become a physician dedicated to finding the most effective ways to communicate with my patients and improve their health outcomes in different types of environments. I first worked in health care locally during the summer after my sophomore year of college when I volunteered at the People’s Community Clinic. It was there that I got my first look at direct health interventions through making health education materials in the…
The experience that had a big impact on my life is going to medical camp. The medical camp was held at our local hospital. The camp allowed me to tour the hospital and speak to workers in various positions throughout the hospital. To get into the program I had to write an essay and have a GPA of 3.5 or better. At camp I was the youngest and the only African American there. While there it opened up my eyes to many other jobs in the hospital that interested me. Prior to going I wanted to be a Pediatrician, but while attending I found two other professions that interest me. The first profession is Occupational Therapy. Occupational Therapy is for people who go through surgery or get into an accident and try to relearn activities of daily living…
This organization helps cancer patients find needed bone marrow donors. Finding donors are very difficult and finding matches are even more unlikely. This event made me realize how fortunate I was. I began volunteering more regularly with the same organization as well as places such as Food-share and a retirement home with residents who have memory loss. SAM and the retirement home mattered the most to me because I have close relatives who have schizophrenia and have died from cancer. Volunteering with these organizations made me realize how fortunate I was and inspired me to keep striving. This gave me a new perspective on life and I became more optimistic and outgoing. In addition to volunteering, I found a job, I began weightlifting, and I became much more social. In changing the way I think, I learned that life continues and that I still have time to improve myself.…
Back then, I was very picky about what I ate. I only ate white rice, chicken nuggets, and pizza, which were all very bad for me. But now that I am all grown up, I am not as picky than I was as a child, and I feel more in touch with my culture now. I am Salvadoran, which people mistakenly think I am Mexican or some other race, and one food I love from El Salvador is pupusas. They are like a very thick tortilla stuffed with beans, pork, and cheese and you put hispanic coleslaw on top and pour red sauce on top of, yet I only the pupusa by itself. I remember my mom tried to make pupusas and it wasn’t like the ones we had at Salvadorian restaurant because this one had love. The first time she made it was awful, it was very dry and the beans were leaking out off the tortilla because she did not have that right corn flour to make it with. Though the food was really bad, all I remember was having fun and making a mess in the kitchen. But the next couple of times, they turned out a lot better. Also recently during Christmas, my mom has been making my great grandmother’s turkey recipe for that last five years, which consists of twenty tomatoes! I love this recipe so much that I wish one day that I could replicated.…
The event that impacted me the most was when my job at Open Door Ministry was being the “runner”. This meant, once all the donated food was packaged and ready to be distributed, I ran it to people’s cars and laid out the food in their trunks or backseats. This task was exhausting and I did not have the strength to be lifting watermelons and five-pound bags of potatoes. I arrived at Open Door Ministry at four o’clock. My arms started aching by six o’clock and I could barely keep my eyes open at seven.…
