I went to St. Michael School from Kindergarten through Eighth grade, so when it came time to leave for high school, I was not excited for the change. St. Michael was especially small in regards to student population. We had just under three hundred students split between all nine grades. That left roughly twenty to thirty kids per class. I was extremely used too this small environment and not exactly looking forward to the terrors of high school towering over me nor the thought of being lost in the sea of students. Over the years I was extremely imbedded in my academics. I had straight A’s for my entire time at St. Michael. I received the academic achievement award at Eighth grade promotion for having the highest GPA in my class. Despite this, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to live up…

The public education system in the United States puts a greater emphasis on test scores and grades that it does actual learning. While around 80 percent of high school students graduate, most of them are not being prepared for what comes next. I have come to believe that there is more to education that a decent GPA, so I have tried to enrich myself with as much real-world experience as possible during my time in high school, while still trying to maintain my grades. My time in leadership positions, desire to work with other intellectual individuals, and rigorous academic goals all make me an exceptional candidate for the Honors College at East Carolina University.…

Ever since my freshman year of high school, I’ve wanted to be a member of the National Honors Society. Being a part of the National Honors Society meant that I would have done well in both my studies and contributing time in my community. In order to reach my goal, I took multiple honors and AP classes to enhance my knowledge. These classes were indeed rigorous and there were many occurrences where I stayed up late doing homework or studying. During these times I felt like giving up, but the passion I had for conquering my goal burnt too brightly. The hard work I’ve placed on my studies has certainly paid off because now I’m at the top 5% in my class with a 3.8 GPA. Also throughout I’ve helped my community in multiple ways such as volunteering…

There is a common myth that high school is an established educational institute set out to deprive you of a social life and your hair before the age of 18 due to its curriculum and demanding courses .This is in fact is one of the biggest disclaimers you'll hear surrounding any high school. In reality, the academic aspect of high school is quite frankly the easiest obstacle to overcome. Although seemingly hard, for the majority of my academic classes this year I've easily adapted and have progressed quite smoothly within each individual course. To tell the truth the hardest course to overcome was AP Chemistry. While the subject itself captivated much of the basic knowledge taught in regular chemistry, the real difficulty was applying those…

I was 18 years old when I first enrolled to Modesto Junior College with over- self confidence and energy. In the beginning of the semester , I attended the classes and took notes , however since high school I was able to pass my class with As and Bs without really working hard , I assumed college will be the same. After paying international tuition and 16 units , I decided that I will go to class when I felt like it. In the middle of the semester, I was barely getting low Cs in the class and failing most of my class. I had a really bad fixed mindset because I did not want to look like I am not smart or intelligent anymore…

I don’t know exactly where I am going. Maybe this comes as a shock to those who think that because someone has good grades, they have their live figured out. It astonishes me just how mistaken this view is. Being born in Cuba I was limited as to what options I had for my life path. Consequently, the transition from one country to another when I was just twelve years old was very frustrating and tough. Somehow I managed to get a grasp of the language and progressively ascend from the lowest English classes to the most advanced in my school. I never failed to be hard on myself though, and I apply this concept to almost everything I do. However, this way of thinking has not come at no cost. My thinking process can be quite obsessive at times.…

The ancient Egyptians had different expectations regarding sexuality and race compared to our modern day society. The main understanding regarding the Egyptians sexual lives was that they did not see it as a taboo like we do today. If anything, it was casually accepted to have such open and sexual lives. Even the religion that they followed was packed full of stories about adultery, incest, homosexuality, and more disturbingly, necrophilia. The Egyptians would even suggest that the Gods wanted them to be as sexually active as possible and made sure that no one felt ashamed about it.…

I started my first year of college with my life prearranged. I had a ridiculous notion that everything was going to be a piece of cake. I was going to join different clubs, do lots of research, make the dean’s list, make my parents proud and attend as many parties as I could. However, now when I look back, I realized that I was too comfortable in my life. I thought I was ready to overcome every obstacle that was thrust upon me but I was sadly mistaken. College was a culture shock. I concluded that college is an entirely different universe, then high school. My GPA dropped for the first time in my life from a 3.7 in high school to a 2.8. The decline in my GPA made me realize that my journey to becoming a doctor is not always going to be easy. It made me hunger to go to medical school even more, to overcome the academic and emotional hurdles, and…

When my parents first expressed to me that I needed to take advanced courses starting freshman year, I was skeptical. I desired an easy, laid-back experience in high school; however, my parents declared otherwise. I began freshman year with three honors classes, and the parental expectation to make at least ninety-five percent in all of my classes. At the time, I thought this to be too extreme, but little did I know that colleges look back on all grades…

The importance of rank structure is to assign levels of responsibility to soldiers. Much like the civilian world those of a lower rank are equivalent to entry level employees. In my first years of highschool I decided that working hard to get good grades was no longer my top priority, I didn't give work any thought when the school day ended. My GPA became very low after my sophomore year, and I soon realized I wouldn’t be able to make it into a college that I liked, let alone a college at all. So, I started pushing myself to be better and study harder than I ever have before so I could try to cover up the hole i dug for myself. That same year I decided to join the Track and field team, I ran the 100m, 200m and jumped for long and high jump! Mary Jane as some people call it is an illegal drug that is used by over 25 million people annually. Smoking pot obviously has far less dangerous and hazardous effects on society. Marijuana has had a bad name for years; the dangers have been completely over exaggerated. Marijuana is not lethal and is much safer than alcohol. Though society has put a picture in people’s heads that cannabis is a highly addictive drug and you can easily overdose. Legalizing marijuana would just benefit its users it could also benefit the government if the government were to tax marijuana. Marijuana has many good attributes especially in its medical value. Marijuana provides relief from pain and nausea and a lot of the times is used for cancer patients.…
