Mr. Framton turned to Mrs. Addie Sappleton, puzzled, trying to interpret what what seemed to be a dead men walking into the house. Mr. Sappleton kissed Addie while Mr. Framton stared, bewildered. Framton pulse quickened, his heart racing with panic. His palms felt slick with sweat and a terrified energy engulfed him as his legs began to tremble.
“Vera, where’s that tea you left to make?” Addie yelled, interrupting her husband’s account of the day’s hunt. Vera shuffled in the kitchen. She hurried in with a tray holding a steaming pot and three small tea cups, for the guest, Mr. Framton, Addie, and herself, playing along to her tale. Framton stood frozen and urged words forth but only a small moan escaped his lips. He took a brief moment to note the open window, past Mr. Sappleton. Mr. Sappleton slowly inched towards Framton in an attempt to calm him. Framton stiffened and shied away from the burly man’s touch.
Addie returned with Vera, scolding her for dropping the tea. Addie tried to overlook the mishap of her niece’s hands. She looked away from Vera to Frampton. His mouth gaped open and he slowly backed away from the deranged family. Addie and Mr. Sappleton became very concerned for Frampton’s health and tried to circle him with welcome. Vera stood on the outskirts looking disinterested with the situation, examining her nails. The room stood in silence confused at Framton’s terror. Overwhelmed with the stress of the situation and his nerves on the edge Framton made his muscles taut and bolted for the window.
