As the narrator, Melinda Sordino, awaits her first day as a freshman at Merryweather High she describes, “the school bus wheezes to my corner” (pg 3). The authors’ use of personification describes the heaviness and panic that is set into the setting. When Melinda arrives at school, she describes, as others’ talk behind her back, the feeling that “words climb up my throat” (pg 5). This personification describes the want to speak up but is silenced by her feelings of anger and disparity. Emily's iron- gray hair has chronological significance in the story. First, the hair belongs to Emily, who had sometime slept on the bed beside Homer Baron's dead body, near where it was found. This term “Iron-Gray” had only lied within passage 4 in paragraph 6 when the narrator describes changes in appearance of Emily: “During the next few years, it grew grayer and grayer until it attained an even pepper-and-salt iron- gray, when it ceased turning”(Faulkner, 4.6) this happened during the period of 6 or 7 years when she gave out china-painting lessons after Homer disappeared. Second, the phrase “Iron- gray hair” has connotations that can be applied to the story. The word: “Iron” could mean stubborn, or iron willed. Stubborn is definitely a describing word for Emily. The group of narrators describes a time when Emily came to pick up a bottle of Arsenic from the general store: “Why, of course”, the druggist said, “if…

I lost track of time, but all I knew was that the daylight was disappearing. After taking the back roads we had finally approached the Wirraree hospital. The town was awfully quiet, so quiet that I could hear my pounding heart out in the open, making me fall in to great suspicion that I was in some sort of trap ready to be captured. Corrie and I were still in the car with the engine running. I didn’t want to get out just yet, unsure of why, but I knew there was soon to be a reason. Turning my head, I noticed three large security cameras in view. Without thinking clearly, I immediately swerved out of sight into a small dark alleyway not knowing it had a dead end. We hid in there for a few minutes, so I could swiftly think about how I could get Corrie out of the car and safely into the hospital without being seen. Before I really even had a minute to consider my…
