Scott, President and CEO of Walmart in support of a sustainability strategy also set three goals for the cooperation: to be supplied 100% by renewable energy, to create zero waste and to sell products that sustain resources and the environment. Through the strategy, Senior level employees would be in charge of running cross-functional teams. Instead of hiring new employees, Walmart's strategy was to make sustainability a new responsibility for all current employees. Only small teams of executives were dedicated to work on sustainability full-time. Consulting groups, academics, suppliers, nongovernmental organizations, critics, and competitors were all asked for their input in order to help
Walmart collect data. This allowed Walmart to avoid having to hire a whole new department of staff, allowing them to cut their costs. As Elm stated, ““Business sustainability isn't something you're doing in addition to your job. It is a new way of approaching your job.” Another way Walmart was deriving business value was by forming relationships. They realized that value doesn't always have to come from a monetary form but it can also come from sparking interests with certain customers. Behind all of
