The Civil War caused a significant amount of deaths. In 1861 both the union and confederates had more than two hundred thousand soldiers. Prisoners of war made up a large amounts of the deaths. Out of the 674,045 people captured, 56,194 died. These jails were often unsanitary and the prisoners were malnourished. The Union had a higher mortality rate in prisons,fifteen and five tenths percent, compared to the twelve persent mortality rates of the Confederates. 476,000 people were wounded during the war.
