In 1977, Deputy Commissioner of the New York State Department of Commerce, William S. Doyle, hired Wells Rich Greens, and Milton Glaser to create a design based on Greens advertisement.
The logo was an unexpected success, and became closely associated with New York City.
After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, many of the citizens of New York City, and tourists, wore the logo t-shirts in support of those who died on September 11.
During the creation of the logo, across in Europe, and in Asia, many countries were fighting with America and her allies. In Vietnam, war continued as America and allies struggled to keep the Viet Cong at bay. In Munich
at the 1972 Olympic Games, 11 Israelietes are killed by Arab terrorists. Finally in 1973, U.S. forces pull out of Vietnam, and shortly after, South Vietnam falls to North Vietnam and becomes a communist state. Then in 1975, U.S. merchant ship, Mayaguez, is seized by Cambodian troops, but is rescued by the U.S. Navy and Marines. Sadly, 38 of these soldiers died in the heroic rescue.
