The paintings from the Rhino and Horse painting were left by people of the Paleolithic era and date back to 30,000 BCE. The paintings found at Lascaux, Shaft of the Dead Man, are closer to the Neolithic era, or about 15,000 BCE. Despite the Rhino and Horse drawings being approximately 15,000 years older, they differ in technique from the Shaft of the Dead Man because they display a greater level of realism with the use of shading which gives the painting a three dimensional look which is not found in the Lascaux cave piece. The technique in the Shaft of the Dead Man painting is still able to represent a realistic drawing of the bison and rhino, but the drawing has two-dimensional properties with the absence of shading found in the Rhino and Horse piece. Another difference is that in the Shaft of the Dead Man painting, a story is being told. The major difference of historic significance between these two pieces is that in the Shaft of the Dead painting the first appearance of a male figure in cave drawing was found. It was the only painting that was found in either the Lascaux or Chauvet caves with a human
