Forget about being just and forget about being understanding. There is no redemption for wrong doing. Every person is not perfect; however the government expects nothing less. "People simply disappeared, always during the night. Your name was removed from the registers, every record of everything you had ever done was wiped out, your one-time existence was denied and then forgotten. You were abolished, annihilated: vaporized was the usual word." (Orwell 19) In this life children, adults, and families do not exist and the punishment is being vaporized; gone forever. The quote is the epitome of a harsh and non-forgiving nature. Imagine a life, every day being worried about death.
Every human needs a fall back. Whether that is from a bad day or committing a crime, there are thousands of ways to mess up. In Oceania it is over. Could it be correct, just, or fair to suffer from the nature of humanity? "Thoughtcrime does not entail death: thoughtcrime is death." (Orwell 28) Committing a crime is the end-all-be-all for Big Brother. The convicted go without a trail, a say, or control over what their future brings. What can be worse than death? With no rights and no way out, it is not right to be condemned to a burden of this magnitude.
Some may believe there is no way to change history because it has happened but Oceania in its controlling manner does just that. They believe if they secure a firm grip on yesteryear they can control the future.
