The legacy of the 1848 revolutions undoubtedly played some part in the eventual unification of Italy however the importance of their role is questionable, as the revolutions had both a positive and negative effect on unification of Italy. Other factors also contributed to Italy’s eventual unification, some, perhaps more so than the revolutions, these factors included the strength and skill of leaders within Italy, fighting for unification and the actions of other countries, especially France and Prussia who both, separately helped Italy and enabled her to move towards eventual unification.

These three men played a hugely important role in the eventual unification in Italy. Mazzini was a key player in the resorgimento, this and his ideas on nationalism encouraged many towards the unification of Italy. Cavour created a strong piedmont improving her economy and so providing a strong state to lead the unification of Italy. The unification of North Italy was mainly due to this man. The efforts of Garibaldi were also hugely important in unifying Italy not only did this man inspire many but he also acquired Sicily and Naples for Italy and furthered the unification process by giving them freely to piedmont. Between these three men most of the Italian peninsula was united, and so they play a more major part in the eventual unification as without out them Italy would have had no one to lead them into unification and the revolutions would not have been as successful. It was the efforts of these three men, especially due Garibaldi’s and Mazzini’s dedication to the cause that Italy was able to be unified without them the people would have no one to follow forward to the eventual unification of
