Society has labeled african-americans because no white person wants to live in the same neighborhood as a black person. In the article, “New Segregation Research Studies White Flight Patterns in the Early 1900s” the text states, “As blacks arrived in northern neighborhoods, more whites left. By the 1920s, there were more than three white departures for …show more content…
every black arrival” (Newsela Staff 2). This shows how white people were actually serious about moving and staying away from blacks because they felt they shouldn't be here. The article also states, “... fire bombing and intimidation, along with secret agreements between whites, were used to keep blacks out” (Newsela Staff 3). White people did not want to live anywhere near blacks just because they had a different skin color from them and thought they were less important.
Another reason of how our society judges black people is when police punish them for no reason, thinking they are criminals or will do bad things to other people.
In the article, “Police killing of black man gains national attention as questions swirl” the text cites, “He made no threat against the police, and the police offered no warning to him” (Newsela Staff 2). This shows how the officers did not know for sure what the man was doing or even if he was the person they were looking for. The police could have just shot him because he was a black man, thinking that he was bad. More evidence from the article says, “Hahn said he did not know if race played a role in the officer’s actions, adding ‘I think race factors into almost everything in our country’” (Newsela Staff 3). Many situations like this are because of race, that may have been the cause here. This evidence shows how many officers and people think African-Americans are bad just because of what they look like and what people assume about
them.
White people also label African-Americans by calling them names such as the “N” word. In the fictional book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, the white people call the Logan family a name that is very offensive to them because of their skin color. They call African-Americans this because they know it is degrading to them. Just because whites do not like them, they are are labeled by that name because white people think they are less important. In the book, the kids are given books for their classes. On the inside cover, the labeling says the books were in poor condition by the time black students got them. The teachers in the book made it for everyone to think that the black students were the ones who made them in bad condition even though they were bad before.
On the other hand, some people say that people in our society have not labeled African-Americans to maintain their power. This point of view makes sense because in some places, whites and blacks can get along with each other. But that is only in certain places, everyone and everywhere you go will be different and people will believe in different things, such as not liking blacks.
Discrimination is just like dust, it is everywhere, and very hard to get rid of. Labeling happens because of people who don't want to live near blacks, police believing they are all criminals, and being called the “N” word. Next time you are rude to someone because of their race, think how it makes them feel. We need to get rid of all of the dust around us so everyone can be happy, and nice to everyone, no matter what.
