Who Is Giles Corey Accused In The Crucible
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, many people are accused and convicted of witchcraft. It starts the rumor of witchcraft in the village, but it evolves into a great witch hunt with many people getting arrested. In the play people often accuse their neighbors or enemies. The accused are often unable to defend themselves of the accusation, so they either get pregnant, confess, or accuse others in order to live. These are just some of the ways many people were accused of witchcraft, but others were motivated by other reasons. In the play people are motivated by greed, jealousy, and hysteria to accuse others of witchcraft.
In the play greed motivates Putnam to accuse his neighbor. In the play many people have been accused for witchcraft, and for many reasons. Giles Corey tries to bring evidence to the court the Putnam got his daughter to falsely accuse Jacobs of witchcraft for their land. “I have it from an honest man who heard Putnam say it! The day his daughter cried out on Jacobs, he said she’d given him a fair gift of land,” says Giles Corey (214). The way he uses “gift” is important because it is a thing given willingly to someone without payment; however, Putnam is stealing it from him through the accusation of witchcraft. In the play John Proctor and Abigail Williams had an affair. Abigail is alone with Proctor after Betty has gone sick and is making sexual advances onto Proctor, but he refuses. “She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her! ...You loved me John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet!” says Abigail (177). Abigail uses “cold” and “sniveling” as derogatory terms to Elizabeth’s character. Abigail wants to be with John, but is frustrated with his newfound loyalty to his wife. Abigail hates Elizabeth Proctor and is willing to kill her. This is how Abigail was motivated by jealousy to accuse Goody
