All of the agreements between countries were all kept hidden; they were not released until after the war. All these secret meetings between countries could have lead to great tension between allies. The first group of allies, known as the Triple Alliance, consisted of German, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The second group were the Triple Entente, consisting of Russia, France, and Great Britain.
The alliance between Austria-Hungary and Germany gave Austria-Hungary a sense of protection. This came into play when the assassination of the Archduke occurred in 1914. When this happened, Austria brought in Germany. Knowing this, Serbia asked Russia for help, and this could be the start of World War 1. With all of this happening, Russia called in France, which as a result France called Great Britain. All of these alliances were being called in, while it should have been a problem between just two countries. Russia and France knowing that they would have an advantage on Germany having a two-front war. They also thought that getting involved would make Germany back out from helping Austria.
