Why Do Congressmen Have Term Limits?
Our Founding Fathers never expected Congressmen to serve life-long terms. They had intended on a system of citizens serving for a few years and then returning to their respective communities. Nowadays, our representatives are making permanent careers out of Congressional positions. They are able to maintain their place in government and make a living off of pay raises and benefits. Polling of voters has shown that there is a general distaste for political careerism. The practice of Congressmen keeping lifetime positions just increases the thirst for power in the men and women whose titles of importance generally determine their ability to keep a job. The recycling of these responsibilities would bring forth new ideas and perspectives to Congress. Term limits are already being issued in several states and need to continue to be addressed. Until boundaries are placed on our Congressional leaders, they will continue to take advantage of the system they seem to continuously abuse. …show more content…
John Adams has also said, “Without [term limits] every man in power becomes a ravenous beast of prey.” By sending our representatives home to their communities we would be forcing them to strongly consider proposed legislation, as they would be returning to laws by which they would be subject to reside under. May 22, 1995, in the U.S. Term Limits, Inc. v. Thornton case the Supreme Court ruled that states cannot impose qualifications on future members of Congress stricter than what is stated in the Constitution. The case was brought to the Supreme Court when the state of Arkansas put an amendment into their state constitution that limited the number of terms any Federal Congressional and Senate candidate from Arkansas could serve. The Supreme Court ruled that “state-imposed term limits were an imperfect, and probably temporary, effort to reform a Congress whose members have become almost permanently ensconced on Capitol Hill” (Zubler 1995). Because term limits can limit the opportunity for someone to grow into their government position, limit citizen’s rights to select their own representatives, and eliminate any incentive representatives have to meet the needs of the public,…

A congress basher would see this as beneficial so they can get more opportunities to gain control in congress, but the reality is this only further weakens the powers of congress because with such short terms constantly up for reelection it is difficult, and almost impossible to achieve anything. Polsby notes the importance and the difficutly of the jobns members of congress have. He specifies with hey manage small group offices and attempt to please ther constituents. They serve on committees that oversee executive branch activity. They participate in general legislative work. They keep track of their own political business and they educate the people they come in contact with. These are just a few of the many duties of congress members, and there is reason things take so long in congress. Each member has to deal with all of the fore mentioned and more. One would be crazy to expect a member of congress to be successful in all of this in less than the current 6 year term. Polsby points out the reason so many members get reelected and it’s because they pay attention to the wants of their constituents. Bashers complain about the high reelection rates but the reason is clear, and this idea of a shortened term will only harm congress. Like Polsby, I think this attempt at congressional reform is a poor idea and can do nothing but harm the governmental system.…

“By shortening congressional terms, proponents hope to make sure that nobody sees becoming a congressional representative as a viable lifetime career choice, leading to more people who get into politics for noble reasons instead of a simple desire for power.” Many politicians who have been in office for such a long time start to get comfortable. Some become known as career-politicians. If there were set terms on these politicians, then they may be more focused on getting issues resolved within an allotted amount of time. “Not only are term-limit laws helping to diversify state legislatures, they are also allowing "regular" citizens to run for state office, say supporters. As a result, citizens--not just career politicians--are playing a large role in the political process, advocates say.” Term limits would give everyday citizens a choice to participate in political roles instead of the same…
