Although students have a lot of responsibilities by the time we graduate high school, they are still pretty young. Most high school students don’t know much out, but graduating classes, their sports teams, clubs, families. Some people might find it hard to figure out who they are on their own. During your year off whether you’re volunteering in a foreign country or working at a local business they will learn what life is like outside of the protective bubble of school. By facing and hopefully conquering challenges in new situations, students become more independent and confident in your ability to deal with whatever life throws your way.
Taking a year off, no matter what you do during it, is an amazing way to figure out who you are and what you want out of life. By distancing yourself from being a part of yet another unit, you can start to understand who you are as an individual.

A lot of students spend their gap years traveling. Traveling, especially internationally, can be a life-altering, mind-expanding experience. You’ll meet new people, experience new customs, deal with unfamiliar languages, and navigate foreign spaces. Their vision of the world will change dramatically, as their own sense of self. There are gap year programs which subsidize traveling costs in exchange for volunteering, as well as programs that help find paid-work in foreign countries.
