polio epidemics. In 1988, polio was on the rise. Thousands of people were being affected by the virus. According to ProCon.org, 35,000 people’s lives were saved due to the polio vaccine. This vaccine was tested on numerous animals in order to perfect the concoction. Without the help of animals, the vaccine would have never made it into a single doctor’s office. This is because it takes diligent practice to make these medicines safe for human use. The only way to test that is to use a living organism. Many vaccines are tested with animals. In fact (Used different syntax to make the sentences flow better), animal tested vaccines happen to stop the epidemic in its tracks and rid people of the illness.
In addition to statistics, there is also scientific proof to why animal testing should be permitted. Throughout history, we have always been side-by-side with animals. In fact, a famous theory states that we were once derived from animals; that the cells of our species came from the animals that roamed the earth before we did. Regardless of theories, scientific evidence does show that we are quite similar to animals. Our cells are practically identical, which makes animals the perfect test subject. ProCon.org states, “Studying cell cultures in a petri dish, […] (I shortened the quote to keep it straight forward) does not provide the opportunity to study interrelated processes occurring in the central nervous system, endocrine system, and immune system”. This shows just how important an animal can be to us.
Although animals feel like partners, sometimes humanity forgets that they too feel pain.
Animal testing often involves force feeding, restraints, and other such necessary tools to keep the experiments controlled. To add to the fact, the majority of animals are put to sleep after their trial is done. Many tests will need the test subject to be deprived of sleep, food, and water in order to see clear results. In spite of this madness, there are also laws in place to ensure that the animals are being in as safe of an environment as they can be. However, not all laws are just. The laws in place are not as strict as one would believe due to the fact that scientists would need the test subjects in certain conditions in order to complete the test properly.
Though animal testing may not be the best option, evidence shows that it is our only option for properly working medication. As we strive for our place in this world, humanity starts to notice patterns, algorithms, and repetition. Sometimes these patterns are the only thing to show us the right way to success. From the past to the present, the statistics all come out the same. We have used animals for the longest time for our survival. It all comes down to the same subject, still. It is our only opportunity to perfect our society, our lives, and our
health.
