This day in age, safety of children has become more concerning than ever before. Schools across the nation are becoming more aware of the potential for violence when weapons are brought in by children, adults, or strangers coming into the school. School shootings are tragic occurrences that have become far too common in today’s culture by many standards. In light of some of the most recent events involving school shootings in Philadelphia, New Mexico and Colorado, as well as the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012, due to this some states are allowing licenses that allow educators to carry concealed weapons onto campus. The first school district to put such a policy into action was the Harrold Independent School District in Harrold, Texas, but numerous other districts have followed suit in recent years, with other districts considering the possibility rather seriously (Chen, Grace).

While Only 39% of schools in the 2009-2010 school year took serious disciplinary action against a student for special offenses. Actions included out-of-school suspension, expulsion, or transfer to a specialty school. In the U.S., 33 school-associated violent deaths occurred in the 2009-2010 school year including homicides, suicides, and legal interventions. 18 of these occurred on school property (11 Facts School Violence). As this evidence shows although schools are moving in the right section against school violence it still is not enough it will not be enough until there are no school shootings no threats and no students life is lost due to something so preventable such as in school
