Secondly, that Karl has had a few very horrendous races where any of the junior varsity boys could have gone faster and questioned if this could happen again. Lastly, they stated that George has more experience with tougher competition, as they both explained why I made the wrong decision I stared at the words at the white board where “Pros and Cons” rested. Not once did I make eye contact with either of them as they stood like defense attorneys refuting their opposition. Everything they said kept jerking at my insides. That day I ran with Karl in deep remorse, as we both jogged I could not bear to look at him knowing that I partook in the demise of his dream. We continued to run in silence because I would not carry a conversation. When we had a mile left in the run Karl looked at me, his eyebrows lifted, the biggest smile on his face, his two buck teeth exposing and expressed how ecstatic he was getting to run at the state meet. Those words struck me right in the heart. I was hesitant to move my head and look at him. I gave him a forced smile and agreed how awesome it would be to run that race. I have never been more ashamed and crestfallen then I was at that moment. That night I asked Verellen and Hunter to meet up tomorrow morning before school. In his book Minority Victory: Gilded Age Politics and the Front Porch Campaign of 1888, Charles W. Calhoun argues that the beginning of modern presidency and campaigning began in 1888 between Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison. He illustrates his points by describing how Cleveland and Harrison’s individual personalities and actions play into the transformation. He also discusses the economic issues that hindered and helped the candidates during their campaigning period and also what made Harrison’s campaign different from previous nineteenth-century Gilded Age presidential politics.…

Her use of imagery enhanced the emotional power of his tale. Never will I forget the triumph in the scene where a 19-year old Zamperini tied Don Lash for first place in the U.S. Olympic qualifying meet in the 5000-meter run, nor will I forget the despair when he and his two surviving crewmates were floating helplessly in the Pacific Ocean, sharing the water with dozens of sharks below. I continue to be inspired by the courage and tenacity he displayed while defying the tormentors that held him…

Screams of excruciating pain interrupted my slumber. Springing up from my sleeping bag, I looked in the direction where I heard the continued sounds of agony, broken bones, and ripping flesh. Quickly scanning the gym with my eyes, I saw that five of Kristine’s survivors became runners. In the bleachers, three of runners dugged their teeths into the survivor’s necks, faces, shoulders, who were lying peacefully and unexpected in their sleeping bags. In the middle of the gym’s basketball court, two more runners’ yanked meat and muscles from survivor’s faces, as the survivors attempted to fight back, however their attempts were useless, the runner’s strength over powered theirs. As one runner, in the middle of the gym, swallowed a survivor’s nose,…

My phone was glued to my hand by the sweat of my hand, I held it all though the night. I had waited for this day for over a year, and I couldn’t understand what was holding me back from jumping out of my bed and leaping into the car. Dragging my feet over to my dresser, I slipped on the mandatory blue jersey polo and cringed as I saw myself in the mirror; I looked like a mess. While eating a blueberry bagel, I grabbed my carry on and suit case and headed out to the car. I could barely keep my eyes open and my stomach was filing with butterflies the closer we got to the…

After the first hour had passed, the rest of the family and I had made our way to the finish line. The crowd was going crazy after the sweaty and dead looking racers had pranced across the line. The tension among us grew as we hoped to see my mom’s musty face also cross that line. I was suddenly able to repose as I scrupulously witnessed a middle aged women ,dressed in neon, run exceptionally fast in a facile way across the finish line. Even though my mom smelled the scent of road kill, my family and I converged to give her the biggest hug we possibly…

The misty September air froze against my skin; at least, it felt like it did. As we walked along the river, I debated the effectiveness of a faking an injury. Perhaps, then we would finally take a break. Although, It is far more likely we would continue to shuffle on, herded by orange traffic cones and dreary-eyed volunteers. Even now, years later, I still marvel at the fact the race starts at 8:00 AM. Whoever supplied the idea must not have recognized the pain it would cause my nine year-old self. Nevertheless, as we marched through downtown Portland, I felt a distinct similarity to the toy soldiers my brother had been so fond of. While we were disorganized and reckless, we walked quietly, with a common urgency. The comparison could also…
