So, I took it upon myself to always speak to him and just try to interact with him, getting him to open up and talk to the other kids. One day a lady came with her brief case and it was his social worker. The little boy had been considered as being neglected, by his mother. The charge was that she was mentally ill. The social worker would ask him a series of questions, and he would answer them. She always tried to make him feel comfortable with her. After she would finish, the little boy always said, “no matter what my family say my mom is not crazy, she is just being herself.” After seeing that, I knew that I wanted to try and do more for bettering a child’s life outside of the classroom setting. Yes, as a childcare provider, I am molding a

Throughout the course we learned about different fields of social work, the complications that come with the job, and the different people you will encounter. Thus, changing our thoughts and feelings towards social work. Before taking the class our thoughts about social workers were more or less simple minded. I say this because most of us thought social workers simply deal with children and some consider them “child snatchers”. After getting the opportunity to take the class, we learned there is more to social workers than we thought. Social workers work with different ages, races, religions, and genders. We also learned how social workers work with these different populations (Morales, Sheafor, & Scott, 2010). During class we discussed a…

Since the parents entrust the wellbeing of their children to me, it is important that they feel as though they are not only an active part of their children’s lives when away, but also an active member in the development of their child. In order to be successful at this, I will maintain an open, friendly, and cooperative relationship with each child's family. By inviting the parents to visit and volunteer as often of possible, I will be able to build a trusting relationship. I decided to become an early childhood professional because kids are simply my passion. Even though working with children may not always be easy, its still worth it. Some days can be frustrating, and we may need to go take a breather, but there’s always something in my head telling me to not give up. When I’m around kids, I feel like I forget everything that's around me, I forget what’s going on. If I arrive in a bad mood, when I sit down with a child, my mood changes. I have babysat for the past few years and my passion for kids have grown larger and larger throughout the years. I feel like since when I started this program a year ago, I've come a long way, and I’m not afraid to be silly with the kids anymore.…

I believe that I am a strong candidate for the Social Justice Fellowship Program because I embody a commitment to social justice and I have been able to excel academically; earning a 3.745 cumulative G.P.A., full scholarship for my senior year, dean’s lists, honors and awards recognition, and being an active change maker through leadership and service. In 2013, I earned the President’s Bronze Standard award given to me by Honorable Mwai Kibaki, the third president of Kenya, for being a young person equipped with positive life skills and a change maker in my community, country, and globally. Despite having faced challenges in my life, including the socio-economic challenges of growing up in the slums of Kariobangi South in Nairobi, Kenya; where I saw my neighbors experience a cycle of poverty and helplessly watched as friends, close relatives, and other young girls dropped out of school due to teenage pregnancy and young men becoming criminals, I have excelled academically and achieved some of my goals. The most challenging experience due to my socio-economic status was during my sophomore college year when I learned that my cousin, who was a brother to me, had been a victim of a deadly armed robbery. This experience opened my eyes to the sacrifices I was making by pursuing a higher…

The child I am observing (Child N), is a five-year six-month old boy who attends a public school located in the West Village area of Manhattan. He is classified as being speech impaired. As per classroom teachers, he is bright in the sense that there are some tasks he is able to complete without verbal cues such as sorting, and an inquisitive child in the sense that shows interest in new things and people. My first day he stared at me nearly the entire time I was in the class. He demonstrates delays in most areas of development. Child N receives speech therapy individually two times a week for thirty minutes in a separate location and in a group of three, once a week, for thirty minutes in a separate location. Throughout my high school years I took Child Development courses and worked as a student worker with at risk families with children from birth to three years of age. Shortly after my marriage I worked with preschoolers in my school district’s Pre-K Center. That was such a rewarding time for me. I continued to work there until the birth of our daughter. That’s when I decided to be a stay at home mom to teach/play with her and bond being my child’s first teacher. A few years later my second and last child came along. I sure found out how different children/siblings are. Now, I try to remember that we are all made from a different mold.…

My career path that I stuck with through my ending of high school, conflicted on my values as a person because I am the type that likes to deal with the elderly care and help them the best way I can knowing that they don’t have the independence as much anymore. For me what interest me the most about the professional to have that mindset to be grateful for what I have in my life and focusing on how society works as a whole. I viewed social work to be a very open minded profession. Throughout my last year of high school I was reconsidering my career of social work because I was nervous to attended college. I wanted to wait out a year before going to college because I didn't know what it was going to be like, but I had to do what was best for me and go straight from high school to college so it wouldn’t be hard for me when i get into my young adulthood. Being surrounded in a positive environment allowed me to want to continue this career choose. Also, I was guided by my family to do the right thing because growing up seeing how hard it was for my mother I wanted her to see that I was going for a career that I would stick to. Even though I am in the program now in college it is not what I expected but the fact that I got the chance it is a real eye opener to have the experience to continue on in the…

I observed a 27 month old boy at the a day care center. There were 20 other students present during my observation. I observed this child for approximately one hour in the morning and thirty minutes later in the day. During both of the times I was observing the child he had several crying spells. He would not play with the other children. When the class went outside he wanted to stay next to the caregiver and not interact with the other children. When the other toddlers tried to comfort him by hugging him, he shied away and cried even more. The caregiver asked him why he was crying and he stated that he wanted his mother. I noticed that when his mother dropped him off in the morning that he was crying. She held him and took him outside of the classroom and spoke with him briefly. Her speech sounded harsh to me. I was not sure exactly what she was saying but her face was angry and her body language was rigid. She responded very negatively to him. The caregiver gently took the child from his mother and cradled him in her arms until his mother was out of sight. Then she sat down with him on her lap and explained to him that if he needs anything or if he feels sad all he has to do is go to her. She was patient with him, holding his hand quite often, carrying him occasionally, and engaging him in conversation. She also read to him several times which seemed to calm him down.…
